Gary Michael Null (born 1945) is a talk radio host and author on alternative and complementary medicine and nutrition in the United States. He is also a critic of the medical and psychiatric communities. He is the owner of the supplement and media company Gary Null & Associates, Inc.[1] He was raised in West Virginia with his two brothers. He has one daughter, Shelly Null, with whom he has co-authored a book. He has several associates: Doug Henderson, a lawyer, who is the Director of Operations for Gary Null & Associates and frequently co-hosts Null's radio shows; Richard Polonetsky, the vice-president of Gary Null & Associates, and ; Manette Loudon, who heads his production company.

Education

Gary Null holds an Associate Degree in Business Administration as well as a Bachelor of Science degree from Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, New Jersey and a Ph.D. from Union Institute & University, a private college specializing in distance learning programs, in Cincinnati, Ohio, in human nutrition and public health sciences. His Ph.D. thesis was titled, "A Study of Psychological and Physiological Effects of Caffeine on Human Health." This school is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools but its accreditation does not cover awarding of PhDs in the sciences, only in the humanities. He is a New York State Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist.[2]

Promoter of natural alternative remedies and exercise

Gary Null was a short-order cook in his 20's in New York City. Also, in the late 1960s Null was the editor of Caveat Emptor, a consumer health activist publication. Later, he was a New York City health food restaurant owner.[citation needed] He owns a health food store, Gary Null's Uptown Whole Foods Market,[3] in New York City. He is best known as a promoter of natural and alternative remedies. He is the author and producer of more than seventy books, booklets, and audio CDs on the topics of health, wellness, nutrition, and alternative medicine.[4] His work on medical issues has been published extensively in Penthouse.

Talk show host and maker of documentaries

Null's syndicated radio talk show, Natural Living with Gary Null, earned eight Silver Microphone Awards and remains the longest-running continuously airing health program in America for 27 years and counting from New York City.[5] He now broadcasts over the Internet on the Progressive Radio Network.[6] Null has produced several documentary films and many videos on public policy issues, personal health, and personal development. He has also directed and appeared in films and videos.

Null's videos have been aired by PBS during pledge drives, but concern arose within PBS over the sensational claims they contained. Null responded by alleging an effort to silence him, saying: "The guardians of the gates of orthodoxy at PBS... you don't know who their friends are."[7]

Views on conventional medicine

Gary Null has attacked many facets of conventional medicine. He says that physicians are not conspiring but are just trained and conditioned to accept the premises of their profession. Null believes that physicians have an economic interest in sickness maintenance, not prevention. Null co-authored a series of articles on cancer research, new therapies, and political influence for Penthouse, beginning with one entitled "The Great Cancer Fraud".[8][9] He accused the "medical community of suppressing alternative cancer treatments to protect the medical establishment's solid-gold cancer train". Time wrote: "From a young reporter this is to be expected. But two decades later, Null, 54, is still warning of a variety of medical bogeymen out to gull a trusting public."[7]

Gary Null is also noted for his views concerning AIDS denialism. From a June 2000 article he wrote:

"A growing number of critics, including leading virologists and Nobel Prize winning scientists, doctors, journalists, and other academicians, question HIV’s relationship to the diseases we term AIDS. Some argue that HIV has never been isolated; therefore, we have no proof of its existence. Others believe that HIV does exist, but that it can’t possibly be doing everything that it is purported to do as it is merely one of 3,000 retroviruses, none of which have ever been proven harmful. What these dissenters have in common is a belief in the need to re-evaluate the HIV = AIDS hypothesis."

Criticism

Many of Null's viewpoints are controversial and he has attracted the attention of Stephen Barrett of Quackwatch. Barrett criticizes the validity of Null's Ph.D. thesis, his alternative health claims, and several of his commercial products.[10]

The James Randi Educational Foundation, an organization that aims to promote critical thinking, has accused him, together with Wayne Dyer, of "dealing in nonsense", promoting the notion of eternal youth, and prescribing magnets and "other medieval tools" to prevent aging.[11]

The Null Hypothesis: Comments on Gary Null's "Death by Medicine" by James R. Laidler, MD[12] criticizes Null’s work for double counting statistics and for presenting a simplistic and skewed view of medicine.

Null wrote and directed a number of documentary films, mostly on the subject of Alternative Medicine and critiqueing of conventional medicine.[13]
