}} Orai is a city and a municipal board in Jalaun district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the district headquarter for Jalaun District which is part of Jhansi division.

Because of its proximity to Industrial city Kanpur, This city has already seen a good growth in Industrial area and going forwad to become an industrial hub after Kanpur.

City has historical value because of its location which is between Jhansi, Mahoba and Kalpi.

History

The city of Orai is believed to be named after a sage Rishi Uddhalak and was earlier known as Uddhalak Nagari,also known as mahil nagari.

Geography

Orai is located at 25°59′N 79°28′E / 25.98°N 79.47°E / 25.98; 79.47[1]. It has an average elevation of 131 metres (429 feet).

Climate

This place has a composite climate (very hot during summers and very cold during winters). Relative humidity remains about 40-50%.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Orai had a population of 139,444. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Orai has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 65.38%. Male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 62%. In Orai, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Location

Orai is located midway between the cities of Kanpur and Jhansi and lies on National Highway 25 which is soon going to be a part of East-West corridor of the NHAI Project.

Connectivity

Orai is well connected by road and rail.Several express and superfast trains running from kanpur and Lucknow towards the southern,central and western parts of the country pass through Orai.A large number of government and private buses connect the city to the major towns and cities of UP as well as those of other neighbouring states.Chakeri is the nearest airport connecting Delhi and Lucknow. One can move almost in the all the direction from Orai. It is such a beautiful location.
