The 39 Clues is a series of fantasy adventure books, the first of which, The Maze of Bones, written by Percy Jackson and the Olympians author Rick Riordan, deals with the death of fictional character Grace Cahill. The grandmother of main characters Amy and Dan, Grace dies and leaves with them a will that invites them to search the globe for thirty-nine clues. Upon completing the offer, the winners are said to become the "richest, most important people in history." Riordan will also cover the main story arc, although a team of authors has been signed, each author to write one or more of the following books in the series. The series is unique in that it will allow readers to compete online and through a trading card game for prizes. Along with writing the first book, Riordan will continue to oversee the progressive story arc.

The Cahill family

The Cahill family is split into four branches. One is the Lucians, who are descendants of the world's greatest leaders and spies, such as Benjamin Franklin and Sidney Reilly (the turn-of-the-twentieth-century double agent known as the "Ace of Spies"). Lucians allegedly control secret bases such as Area 51. The Ekaterina branch are descendants of famous scientists and inventors, such as Marie Curie. The Janus branch is made up of the world's most famous and talented people, like the fictional rap star Jonah Wizard and Steven Spielberg. The Tomas branch is made up of famous explorers and discoverers. Heinrich Henrichson is a Tomas agent who loves to take risks. Annie Oakley, the "sharpest shooter in the West," was a Tomas woman. And last but not least, the Madrigals ( Not a Cahill Branch ),who are all over the world undercover. No one really knows much about them but, beware the Madrigals!!!

Interactivity

The ten novels in the 39 Clues series will each contain real-life clues for readers to decipher. According to Rick Riordan's official page[1], both an online and trading card game will be launched alongside the book, in which players will be able to win prizes.

The Maze of Bones

The Maze of Bones is the first book in the series. It was published on September 9th, 2008. It is about Amy and Dan Cahill who are looking for 39 Clues that will make the Cahill(s) that finds them the most powerful person (people) in the world. However, when they are given the choice to either take a million dollars or get the first Clue, Amy and Dan end up choosing the Clue despite not being financially well-off. The other Cahills immediately determine them to be a source of competition. They track their first Clue to Paris.

One False Note

One False Note is the second book of the series. It will be written by Gordan Korman and will come out on December 2, 2008. Amy and Dan follow the second clue to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna, Austria.

The Sword Thief

The Sword Thief is the third book of the series. It will be written by Peter Lerangis. Publication date is March 3, 2009.

Planned films

Steven Spielberg acquired film rights to the series in June 2008. DreamWorks CEO Stacey Snider believes the books can amount to three or four films. Spielberg and Scholastic Media president Deborah Forte will produce the series,[2] while Spielberg is interested in directing the first film. Jeff Nathanson was hired to write in September 2008.[3]
