The Mumbai Chabad House (also known as the Nariman House[1]) is a Jewish outreach center in the Colaba section of Mumbai, India. The "Chabad house", run by the Chabad Hasidic sect, houses an educational center, a synagogue, a hostel, and offers drug prevention services.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Jewish life in Mumbai

Between 4,500 and 5,000 Jews live in Mumbai.[8] The other Jewish service in Mumbai is the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee[8] which runs a Jewish Community Center and has 500 members with classes on Hebrew and Judaism, holiday parties, youth discos and clubs for children and seniors.[9] Also, there is a "ORT" (Organization for educational Resources and Technological training), an international Jewish organization with the mandate of helping impoverished Jews and which sells kosher wine, challah, chicken and baked goods.[9]

Also, started in 2004 is the Hazon Eli Foundation for Jewish Life in India, based in Thane (a suburb of Mumbai where many younger Jewish familes are moving to), to teach Torah, Hebrew and Jewish law to the suburban population. A Sunday school is run there for children under 13, which attracts about 25 students weekly.[9]

In Mumbai, there is also the Jewish founded "Sir Jacob Sassoon High School" and "Sir Elly Kadoorie High School", but today there are only a handful of Jewish students left but they once had Hebrew and Torah classes.[9]

Chabad House

The center, located at 5 Hormusji Street[10], is run by Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and caters mainly to Israelis who are on their way to "party hotspots" such as Goa and Rajasthan.[9] The three flights a week bring hundreds of them from Israel to Mumbai and in an interview Holtzberg said he understood the nature of their needs. The young Rabbi, who grew up in Brooklyn said that they "need relief" from the army, from work, from real life.[9] He said, “they come here to do everything the army didn’t allow them to do. Their shoes had to be polished and tied – here they wear sandals. They had to cut their hair – here they grow their hair long.”[9]

Terrorist attack

The Chabad centre was seized and attacked during the November 2008 Mumbai attacks[11][12], at around 9:45 pm local time on Wednesday[3], the four terrorists took advantage of the fact that local security forces were operating in several locations throughout the city.[13] Newscasters were calling it the "final assault"[14], and the building is near the Leopold Cafe, another building attacked during the strike. Initially it was reported that six Israelis were being held hostage.[11] though that later jumped to 8 with a Chabad spokesman in Israel, Moni Ender, saying there were at least eight Israelis inside the house, including Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka Holtzberg[14] and according to several reports, both Holtzberg and his wife were unconscious.[15] The Rabbi's two -year-old son was released earlier Thursday along with his nanny[15], Sandra Samuel, 44, who also worked as a cook for the centre for the last five years.[16] Israeli Channel 2 reported one of the hostages had been forced at gunpoint to call the Israeli Consulate in Mumbai with the captors' demand for the release of several Islamic terrorists from Indian jails.[2]

It was reported gun men opened fired indiscriminately towards the crowd [11] and 4-5 casualties among hostages taken by the gun men.

Late Thursday evening, State officials in India confirmed to the Associated Press that eight hostages were released from the Chabad House.[17] According to several reports there was some sort of military operation at the scene, and that it looked like they were waiting for an opportunity to storm the building. At that time, it was still unclear how many additional hostages were still being held and whether Holtzberg and his wife were among those released.[17] Evidently, while 8 have been released, earlier reports said that 4 remain "unconscious" inside.[18][16]

Later, conflicting reports surfaced, by Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor saying that the 8 people seen near Chabad House were not hostages, and that they were local Indians from a home in the same compound, and not Jewish or Israeli hostages[2] and CNN India reported very early Friday morning that a large blast was heard at the centre, signaling that fighting has not ended.[19], however Israel Radio reported that the Indian forces were searching for other gunmen inside the building and not a single a shot had been fired and the building has been taken over by Indian security forces.[2]

Shortly before dawn on Friday[20], Indian security forces began an attack on the Chabad House and that an unknown number of people were being held hostage. TV footage showed troops abseiling from a helicopter into the building, and soldiers on the ground closing in.[21]
