The exact procedure is yet to be determined, but will be radically different from last year's, reflecting our learning about what did and didn't work.
The election will take place at a time yet to be decided. The vote will probably be held using [[Special:ArbComVote]] software, as before; this currently uses [[approval voting]]. The newly elected Arbitrators will be allowed to choose the length of their term after the election from those available, in order of most votes received. All of the newly-elected Arbitrators will begin these terms on [[January 1]], [[2006]], and end of term for each individual Arbitrator will be noted in the election results.

The most likely process will be direct appointments by Jimbo based on nominations and volunteerings, with the appointments made in consultation with the existing and former ArbCom members and the community at large, followed by confirmation votes from the community requiring some supermajority.

In December 2005, the second annual election for the Arbitration Committee is intended to be held.

At least seven seats will be up for election, as the terms of Fred Bauder, Daniel Mayer, and David Gerard will expire on December 31, 2005, as will the temporary placements of James F., Fennec, and JayJG. Finally, Nohat has indicated that he will step down then at the latest.

When the Arbitration Committee were first appointed, Jimbo intended that Arbitrators serve staggered three-year terms to provide continuity. In the December 2005 elections, Arbitrators will probably be entitled to run for re-election. The remaining appointed seats will be up for election when their terms expire.
