Notacon (pronounced "not-a-con") is an art and technology conference which takes place annually in Cleveland, Ohio. The name Notacon is an bacronym which stands for Northern Ohio Technological Advancement Conference. Founded by FTS Conventures in 2003, the event was established by a small group of friends who wanted to strengthen and expand their community, and precipitated by the rather rapid dispersion of the Rubi Con event which was held in Detroit, Michigan. Notacon attempts to fill this vacuum.
Most other hacker conventions focus on the mechanics or political issues that surround such activities. However, Notacon focuses on different issues surrounding the scene, such as the elegance of the hack, the underlying beauty and/or artistry of the technique as well as other ways to apply a "hacker mentality" to the areas of art and music. Likewise, Notacon attempts to bring consciousness about regarding the communities that form around events such as itself.
Hence, many aspects of both the art and music world are represented, and the concept of "community through technology" is considered and explored.
