Croatan High School

Croatan High School is a public secondary school in Newport, North Carolina. The high school is part of the Carteret County Public School System. It serves the westernmost third of Carteret County, including the towns of Peletier, Cape Carteret, Cedar Point and western half of the island of Bogue Banks which includes the town of Emerald Isle. Ethnically, Croatan's students are 92% White, 5% African-American, 2% Hispanic, and less than 1% other.[1]

Construction and Development

  • Croatan High School was built in conjunction with Bogue Sound Elementary School on 90-acre (36 ha) plot of land overlooking Bogue Sound.[citation needed]
  • Boney Architects constructed the building in 1997 for about $14 million, at a cost of about $18,000 per student.[citation needed]
  • Croatan was designed for 800 students, and the student population has since fluctuated around that number.[citation needed]
  • The school has also received a bond of $3,320,898 and is currently beginning the construction of a new 700 seat auditorium. The project began in December of 2008.[citation needed]

The Performing Arts

Drama and Music

  • The Drama Department is operated by Barbara Swigart and performs a play or multiple short plays each year.[citation needed]
  • Barbara Swigart also teaches the Vocal Ensemble and Chorus. They have received numerous awards and citations. The groups have traveled and performed in Hawaii, The Czech Republic, Austria, Orlando, and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.[citation needed]
  • The Drama and Vocal Music Departments sponsor the PAC (Performing Arts Club) and the All School Musical each year. They also co-produce a Christmas Dinner Theatre.[citation needed]
  • The Performing Arts Club sponsors three talent shows annually. The Junior and Upper division talent shows in the Fall cater from first grade through age 21 and are performed at the Crystal Coast Jamboree. The third is a school talent show held in the spring in the gymnasium. They also sponsor the All School Musical each year which have included in the past few years: Guys and Dolls, Hello Dolly, Cinderella, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2009 Croatan will be producing Disney's High School Musical and in 2010 they will be producing The Wizard of OZ.[citation needed]

Marching Band, Concert Band, Colorguard/Winterguard

  • The Croatan High School Bands and Colorguard are led by Alice Aldredge and have consistently finished in high scoring places at events such as Bands of America and are serious contenders to any band. Recently they won their last marching competition of the season in Havelock.[citation needed]
  • The Croatan Wind Ensemble annually goes to Contest which is held at Havelock High School by The North Carolina Bandmasters Association and receives high honors in the distinction of Level One performances.[citation needed]
