For example, William S Newman (The Sonata Since Beethoven, p 544-5) was tempted "to ask whether even the 'much promise' does not need re-evaluation", and remarked that "the more curious harmonies and irregular textures ... do not sound like gropings toward new styles but like the unlearned crudities of an average student who got a late start".
