==Plot Summary==
The flock family are living in a remote house in Colorado, hiding from bloodthirsty scientists from a laboratory called The School, the place where they grew up. At this School, the members of the flock underwent cruel scientific experimentation, only being kept alive because they were needed for testing. But one day, a scientist named Jeb Batchelder helps the members of the flock escape The School and takes them to the remote Colorado hideout. Jeb spends two years in this safehouse with the flock, taking care of them and teaching them how to fight. One day, however, Jeb suddenly disappears. The rest of the Flock presumes him dead, and Max takes over as the leader of the group.
The flock family are in Colorado
Two years after Jeb's disappearance, The School somehow manages to locate the flock. Without warning, the group is attacked whilst outside by a bloodthirsty pack of Erasers, human-wolf hybrids who act as guards and executioners at The School. In the ensuing fight, all members of the flock are knocked unconscious, and Angel, the youngest, is captured and taken back to The School via helicopter. Max and the others try to reclaim her, but the Erasers get away. Shocked and grief-stricken, the flock members begin to argue amongst themselves until Max comes up with a plan to rescue Angel. The flock agrees, but Max tells Iggy and the Gasman to stay behind, because the Gasman is too young and Iggy is blind. Both are angry with her decision, but are forced to stay behind while Max, Fang, and Nudge go to rescue Angel. But even though they stay at home, Iggy and the Gasman are not safe. The Erasers attack them again, and they are forced to follow the rest of the flock in order to escape.
(hideout),in which they escape from their so call school, a place where they were locked up in dog crates and underwent harsh testing and experiments. A scientist named Jeb Batchelder who took them in for revenge when they escape from school. From there, Jeb spent two years at the colorado hideout teaching the flock family how to fly and fight. He was supposily called as a fatherly figure, until he disappeared. Max speaks out to the children that Jeb had died. So Max became their leader of their flock of six children, that was recombinant DNA life-forms in which there were 98% human and a 2% bird. Most of the kids have special powers. For example: Angel can read minds and than later on he controls minds and could breathe under water, whilst the Gasman can perfectly mimic anybody in the world, Iggy is than blind because of a experiment he tried to do at the School just trying to improve his night vision.
Meanwhile, as Max, Fang and Nudge fly over Arizona, Max spots a girl down below being harassed by some older boys. To Fang's and Nudge's dismay, Max goes down to help. Though the girl-whom Max finds out is named Ella-manages to escape, Max is clipped by a bullet and is left unable to fly. She wanders around for hours until she finds her way, miraculously, to Ella's house. Ella spots her in the backyard, and when she sees Max is hurt, invites her inside and asks her mother, Dr. Martinez, to help. Dr. Martinez cleans and treats the wound, but in the process discovers that Max has wings. Amazingly, she pretends that this is perfectly normal. This makes Max feel accepted, and as if she is a normal person. She stays with the Martinez family until her wing heals, then flies off to rejoin her flock. Meanwhile, Fang and Nudge have been waiting for Max in a cave above Lake Mead, The cave sits near the nests of some large hawks, which gives Fang and Nudge the opportunity to practice some flying techniques they obtain from the hawks. After a while, Iggy and the Gasman track them down, and Max finally makes her way back, and all of them restart their journey and head toward the School. But on the way there, a group of Erasers, led by Ari (Jeb's son, who is at the time seven years old but was turned into an Eraser when he was three)capture them and take all of them to The School. There, they meet Angel and discover that Jeb is not dead, but has been working at The School. Max immediately shuts down all her daughterly feelings for him, and resolves never to trust him again. Jeb takes her to a secret room and reveals to her the reason she was created: she is supposed to save the world. Despite this latest shocking development, Max still does not trust him.
After they have breakfast, they went outside to pick strawberries out until they were attacked by a group called the Erasers who are human-wolf hybrids made by the School as security guards to the other experiments. Later than, Angel is captured by the security guards and whisked away in a helicopter, leaving the rest of the Flock disheartened and appalled which their greatest fear had just become reality in face.Gasman is taken back to the School, and so the rest of the flock who are planning to rescue his Sister. While Max, Fang and Nudge goes looking for Angel, Max orders Gazzy and Iggy to stay home, telling them that it's too dangerous for them to come along with them. Gasman gets angry that his sister was kidnapped and was not allowed to go. So Gasman and Iggy gets ready for the second attack by the security guards.
Eventually, Max and the rest of the flock manage to break out of The School, rescuing Angel in the process, and head for New York. During the journey, Max begins to suffer excruciating headaches for no apparent reason. After a third of these headaches, she begins to hear a voice in her head that tells her what to do. Through the direction of this voice, and through information Angel managed to pick up at The School, the flock Finds The Institute of Higher Living in New York. Using the sewer tunnels to break in, they hack into a computer and find information about people who could be the flock's real parents. Along with this information, they find other mutants living in cages, just like they used to. As they and the newly freed mutants escape, Ari confronts Max and she is forced to fight him in order for the others to escape. To her horror, Max manages to break Ari's neck in the fight. As she flies off, Max hears Jeb yell after her "You killed your own brother!" Max is shocked. Does this mean that Ari is really her brother? As the story comes to a close, Max and her flock fly towards Washington DC, where they believe they will find their parents.
While flying to the School,Max is separated from Nudge and Fang to save a girl named Ella Martinez from a local bullies, but is shot in the wing in the process, leaving her, not able to fly. She is forced into receiving the help of the girl and her mother, who is a veterinarian, but the risks reveals her identity. However, she is shocked when they try to act normal after finding out that her secret from some X-rays and in fact do not freak out, making her like them and becoming her first two human friends. Meanwhile, Fang and Nudge wait for Max with hawks overlooking Lake Mead. Fang and Nudge fly with the hawks and notice flying techniques that the hawks use. Fang mimics them and discovers a better way to fly. Finally they meet up with Gazzy, Iggy who escaped from the house, which was overrun by Erasers, and Max. Once again united, they continue on with their mission to get to the School and save Angel.
At the infamous School, Angel has been subject to cruel tests of her endurance, brainpower, and more. So Angel finds out that Jeb isn't really dead, which he lied and didn't die because he wanted to get them back to school. Angel questions Jeb how much longer she can she do this. Some Erasers attack Max, Fang, Nudge, Gazzy and Iggy, but only Iggy and Gazzy escape. Later on, Jeb talks to Max in a room at the School and tells her she was meant to save the world. Max remains in a deep anger about Jeb's betrayal and so she didn't trust him.
The flock rescues Angel and manages her to bust out, heading to New York City. Max begins to have crushing headaches for no discernible cause except for a mysterious voice in the back of his head, which shows his pictures and tells his cryptic messages. Through the direction of the Voice, the Flock finds the Institute for Higher Living, where Nudge discovers her gift being able to sense left over memories by touching any objects. With Nudge's help, the Flock unlocks a computer at the institute and discovers information about their parents all except for Max's. Dangerous farther into the institute, they find other mutants like themselves whom they set free. One of them is Total, a seemingly normal small black dog, that can jump high into the air who is unofficially adopted by Angel. Once they reach the tunnel, which serves as an escape route, there is a fight between Ari and Max in which Max breaks Ari's neck. Horrified, Max realizes she killed Ari, and as she escapes with her flock, she hears Jeb shouting "You killed your own brother!". As the story comes to an end, they fly onwards to Washington, D.C, where they believe most of their parents are, based on the notes they retrieved from the Institute.
