Edin Džeko (born 17 March 1986 in Sarajevo)[1] is a Bosnian football striker who currently plays for German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg and the Bosnian national team. Prior to arriving at Volkswagen Arena in 2007 he played for FK Željezničar, FK Ústí nad Labem and FK Teplice.

Club career

Džeko made his debut at FK Željezničar, where he played as a midfielder in the season 2003–2005. He scored five goals in a total of 40 games. In 2006, he moved to Czech side FK Teplice. There he played from 2005–2007, where he scored 16 goals in 43 games, becoming the top scorer of the league in 2006–07 season. Due to his performances there, manager Felix Magath of VfL Wolfsburg signed him for €4 million. The move turned out well for him as he scored five goals and made three assists in twelve games. He was also named by Sportal.de as the best striker in the first half of the 2007–08 Bundesliga season.

His second season has been even better. After a slow first half of the season he and his team found their form and Dzekos 15 goals has led Wolfsburg to the top of the Bundesliga after 26 matches. Dzeko's current tally in Bundesliga after 27 matches stands at 16 and Wolfsburg are are three points clear of current title holder's Bayern Munich.

International career

Džeko first started to play with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national under-19 football team in 2003 and 2004 in Kazakhstan and Italy. He was also part of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national under-21 football team and played in 2007 when the competition was hosted by the Netherlands. Bosnia's first challenge was Armenia and Norway. They beat Armenia 3-2 and tied with Norway 1-1 thus qualifying for the playoff against the Czech Republic. First leg Bosnia lost 2-1, second leg came out as a 1-1 draw. Džeko scored multiple goals in this tournament. Now he is a valuable member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team. He made his senior debut against Turkey on 2 June 2007. It was a memorable debut for the youngster which he capped off with volleyed goal from the edge of the penalty area during first half stoppage time. The goal leveled the score at 2-2 which Bosnia went on to win 3-2. He has scored seven goals in FIFA 2010 World Cup™ Qualifiers and is currently the top scorer of the qualifications.
