The Shire of Broome is one of the four Local Government Areas in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia, covering an area of 55,796 square kilometres (21,543 sq mi), most of which is sparsely populated. It has a population of 16,360 (ABS 2001), most of whom reside in the town of Broome. Many Aboriginal communities are located around the shire, notably Beagle Bay and Bardi (One Arm Point).

History

Broome Road Board was first gazetted in November 1901, which dissolved in 1908 and became part of the West Kimberley Road Board in 1908. The town's residents were governed by a Municipal Council from 1904 until 1918. In 1918, Broome Road Board was once again constituted, with wards for the previous town (Broome) and road district (Dampier). On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act.

Wards

The shire has been divided into 2 wards.

  • Broome Ward (7 councillors)
  • Dampier Ward (2 councillors)
