- The European Energy Council and Greenpeace believes that the entire world can be powered by renewable energy by 2090.
- 23 September 2090: Total Solar Eclipse in UK. The next total eclipse visible in the UK follows a track similar to that of 11 August 1999, but shifted slightly further north and occurring very near sunset. Maximum duration in Cornwall will be 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Same day and month as the eclipse of 23 September 1699.

- During the events of the Animatrix, a domestic machine named B1-66ER is threatened by its owner, and kills both the owner and a mechanic instructed to deactivate it. This murder is the first incident of an artificially-intelligent machine killing a human. B1-66ER is arrested and put on trial, but justifies the crime as self-defense, stating that it "simply did not want to die."
