Tottenville High School is located at 100 Luten Avenue, in Huguenot, Staten Island, New York. It is located within walking distance of the Huguenot train station of the Staten Island Railway system.
The school houses several sports teams, plus many different and unique after-school clubs and activities. The school offers "College Now" courses to qualifying students. Tottenville also houses an Academy of Finance, a partner of the National Academy Foundation, which provides a business oriented education for students. There is also a "med-tech" program, with a primary focus on medical science. Furthermore, Tottenville High School also houses two institutes: Science and Humanities, which provides rigorous courses for the academically gifted. The school is also home to a United States Marine Corps JROTC Unit. Furthermore, Tottenville High school houses an automotive program. The principal is John P. Tuminaro.
Brief history
Originally, from its opening in 1898, the school was located in the actual neighborhood of Tottenville. In 1972, though, the school was relocated into a larger and more efficient building in Huguenot. The old building went on to house Totten Intermediate School 34.
Institute program
The Institute program allows for academically gifted students to take an accelerated course load. All institute students are required to maintain an overall average of 88% and higher, or else risk expulsion from the program. Furthermore, all Institute classes are required to be in either Advanced placement or Institute level courses.
Science Institute
The Science Institute participants are required to take these courses throughout their high school career.
Freshman Year: Institute English, Institute Global History I, Integrated Algebra/Geometry, Institute Biology: Living Environment, Institute Chemistry, Second Language I or II and Physical education.
Sophomore Year: Institute English Humanities, Institute Global History II, Geometry/Algebra 2 & Trigonometry, Institute Physics & AP Biology or Technical drawing, Science Research, Second Language II or III, and Physical Education.
Junior Year: Institute English, AP American History, Algebra 2 & Trigonometry/Pre Calculus, AP Biology or AP Physics or AP Chemistry, Science Research or CISCO Networking or Architecture Sequence, Second Language II or IV, Fall: Institute Economics and Physical Education. & Spring: Physical Education or Institute Health.
Senior Year: AP English, AP European History or AP Political Science, College Pre Calculus/Pre Calculus or AP Calculus, AP Chemistry or AP Physics or AP Environmental Science (AP Psychology can be chosen if 2 AP science classes are completed), Art/Music Elective or CISCO Networking or Architecture Sequence, Second Language IV or Elective.
Humanities (Classic) Institute
The Humanities Institute participants are required to take these courses throughout their high school career.
