After Ryan Weaver ([[Ray Liotta|Liotta]]) is arrested for a murder he states he did not commit, he must be transported back to LA escorted by 4 U.S Marshalls on a commercial [[Boeing 747]]. Because it is Christmas Eve, the plane is nearly empty: fewer than 20 people are on board. During the flight, Stubbs (Gleeson), another prisoner being escorted, breaks free and manages to begin a shoot out with the Marshalls. Amongst the chaos, both the pilot and the co-pilot are killed. Weaver also manages to break free and attempts to save the last remaining Marshall but fails when both Stubbs and the Marshall are shot dead. Weaver appears to be horrified by the entire ordeal, increasing the passengers trust in him. Because of the death of the pilots, Teri Halloran (Holly) makes her way into the cockpit and learns she is the only one left capable of keeping the plane from crashing. To make matters worse, the plane is heading for a category 6 storm. Meanwhile, Weaver's behavior becomes increasingly erratic until he finally locks the passengers in the crew cabin and strangles another flight attendant to death. His motives become clear after a phone call with the detective who arrested him. Weaver attempts to coax Halloran into leaving the cockpit, intending to kill her and crash the plane into LA. After Halloran leaves the cockpit to search for the murdered flight attendant, she learns Weaver's motives and manages to get back to the cockpit. Being the only hope for the planes survival, she must be instructed on how to land the plane. Halloran's first landing attempt is unsuccessful, with the plane skimming an office building and a car park due to Weaver's meddling with the flight controls. She then must turn the plane around and leave LA airspace. Halloran begs LAX not to have her shot down as a result of her failed first attempt and convinces them that she can land the plane. At this point, Weaver, at the peak of his madness, breaks into the cockpit and fights Halloran one final time. Halloran, desperately clinging onto life, spies one of the Marshalls guns which she uses to kill Weaver. She returns to the cockpit and safely lands the plane. Despite Weaver's allegations that he killed them all, the passengers are found. |
