Sudhir Ruparelia is a businessman and entrepreneur in Uganda. He is the Chairman and majority shareholder in the companies of the Ruparelia Group.[1] His investments are mainly in the areas of banking, insurance, education, broadcasting, real estate, floriculture, hotels and resorts.

History

Sudhir Ruparelia was born in Uganda, but moved to the United Kingdom with his parents in his early teens. He returned to Uganda in 1985, with US$25,000 to start his Ugandan businesses, which later grew into the Ruparelia Group.[2]

Personal life

Sudhir Ruparelia is married to Jyotsna Ruparelia and they have three children. Sudhir bought his youngest son, Rajiv, a nightclub for his eighteenth birthday[3].

Criminal charges

In 2005 a court issued an arrest warrant for Ruparelia on charges of causing a nuisance in the suburb of Bukoto. The warrant was requested after Ruparelia and his lawyers failed to appear at City Hall Court. He was charged with three counts of causing a nuisance, with the prosecution allegeing that at the Kabira Club in Bukoto, which Ruparelia owns, he caused a nuisance in Nakawa division and the district contrary to the Public Health Act. It was also alleged that he discharged sewage into a storm water channel contrary to the Public Health Act[4].

Tax evasion charges

In 2007, Ruparelia lost his court action to restrain the Uganda Revenue Authority from recovering 36 billion Ugandan shillings in unpaid taxes, after his company Meera Investments failed to pay taxes on rental income for its properties[5]. In January 2009, the Uganda Revenue Authority lost this case on appeal before the Uganda Supreme Court. Justice George Wilson Kanyeihamba wrote the unanimous opinion. [6][7]
