When the occupant of a particular house becomes famous the building may take person's name. For example, Chatham House, the current home of the United Kingdom's Royal Institute of International Affairs is named after its former occupant William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham. For common surnames, there may exist several houses by the same name. For common English-language examples, see:

A complete list is impossible, because any surname could potentially be used.

"X House" (where X represents the owner or primary function of the building) is a common name for government, business, and institutional buildings in the British tradition. In this case the building is not necessarily a residence, but may be. For example Government House was the name used for the governor's mansion in dozens of British colonies. The diplomatic missions of Commonwealth countries in London are named Australia House, Canada House, New Zealand House, India House, Malta House, South Africa House, Tuvalu House, Uganda House, Zimbabwe House, etc. Other examples include Broadcasting House (the BBC), Church House (several), Transport House (union headquaters). Several university residences also use the word house.
