Final Destination 2 is a 2003 supernatural thriller, and sequel to Final Destination (2000). Directed by David R. Ellis staring A. J. Cook as Kimberly Corman, and Ali Larter as Clear Rivers. The film is set in White Plains, New York and in the proximity of Greenwood Lake, NY, in 2001, a year after the events of the previous movie and has three returning characters; Alex Browning, Clear Rivers and the mortician William Bludworth. Grossing $16,017,141 on its opening weekend in the US, which was a significant portion of its overall profit. It was a minor hit, debuting in its first week at #2 and falling from then onwards.[1] It was followed by Final Destination 3.

Plot

The film takes place one year later after the Flight 180 curse from the first film. While on vacation, Kimberly Corman (portrayed by A. J. Cook) experiences a vision of a mass pile-up on the highway on which she is travelling. She blocks the entrance ramp to the highway so that motorists who would have otherwise died are spared. No one believes Kimberly until a mass pile-up happens on the highway just like in her vision. Soon the survivors who would have perished in the hishway crash start dying in mysterious ways as in the first film as is the premise of these films you can't cheat death. With the help of Clear Rivers, Kimberly tries to stop death's design before everyone dies. Kimberly visits Clear in a mental institution where she tells Kimberly to be careful because the order has reversed itself. It is suggested that the characters destined to die in this film were somehow spared from death as a result of the elaborate deaths in the first film (a character was a passenger on a bus that missed an accident when said bus hit a girl), adding another element of complexity to Death's Design. It also has perhaps one of the bigger plot holes of the series seeing how one of the minor characters (Brian, who was saved from being hit by a news van) could have only died if the other characters hadn't died.

Characters

  • Kimberly Corman (played by A.J. Cook): The female lead, and the visionary whose warning leads to several other motorists and drivers avoiding the accident on Route 23. She and Tom were confirmed dead in the 3rd film in an easter egg on the DVD. She was the last one to die and did so between Final Destinaton 2 and Final Destinaton 3. She and Officer Burke got sucked into a wood chipper.
  • Officer Thomas Burke (played by Michael Landes): A New York state trooper and lead male character. He and Kimberly were confirmed to be dead in the 3rd film in an easter egg on the DVD. He was the seventh one to die which was between Final Destination 2 and Final Destination 3.
  • Clear Rivers (played by Ali Larter): The lone survivor of the Flight 180 curse (from the first film of the series) who uses her experiences to guide the new group of survivors. She is killed in the explosion in the hospital along with Eugene.
  • Eugene Dix (played by TC Carson): A teacher who is initially skeptical of Death's design, but becomes convinced after witnessing the predicted death of a fellow survivor. He is killed in the explosion in the hospital along with Clear. He is the sixth one to die.
  • Rory Peters (played by Jonathan Cherry): A drug addict, and the film's comic relief. He is killed after an explosion, being cut into four pieces after a barb-wire fence rams into him. He is the fifth one to die.
  • Kat Jennings (played by Keegan Connor Tracy): A very direct woman who appears selfish and tends to complain often. She is killed after being in a car crash and becoming stuck in her seat, when the airbag goes off and impales her head into the pipe protruding from the back of her seat. She is the fourth one to die.
  • Nora Carpenter (played by Lynda Boyd): Tim's mother, and oldest of the survivors. She is killed in an elevator by decapitation. She is the third one to die.
  • Timothy "Tim" Carpenter (played by James Kirk): Tim is 15 years old, and is the youngest of the survivors. He is crushed to death by a giant glass window. He was the second one to die.
  • Evan Lewis (played by David Paetkau): A young man who recently won $250,000 in the lottery. He is killed by impalement through the eye by a fire escape ladder. He was the first one to die.
  • William Bludworth (played by Tony Todd): reprising his role as the mortician who warns the survivors of Death's Design. He also suggests that "new life" will be able to overcome Death. His fate is unknown.

Reception

On its release, Final Destination 2 received generally mixed reviews from critics. While most praised it for its special effects and inventive death sequences, some dismissed it as being 'an average sequel to an average movie'.

The film has landed on many "best car crash/accidents" lists including one by New York Magazine which cited the highway pile-up scene as the greatest car crash in movie history, calling it "the new gold standard for car-related chaos in cinema".[2] Even acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino was quoted as saying that the opening scene was "a magnificent car action piece".[3]
