American Outlaws is a 2001 Western film directed by Les Mayfield and starring Colin Farrell, Scott Caan, and Ali Larter.

Plot

The life of Jesse James.

Historical Innaccuracies

Nothing is mentioned in the movie regarding Zee and Jesse's familial relationship. They were not childhood friends but first cousins. James' mother Zerelda was not killed when the James farm was raided (though she was severely injured by a bomb), and outlived Jesse by many years. The raid in question did not provoke the James boys to escalate their criminal activities, as they had already been involved in multiple train and bank robberies, which were the cause of the raid that injured their mother, not the effect. The James/Younger gang robbed for profit, not protest, and killed anyone who tried to stop them without any apparent qualms. Zee played no role in rescuing James from the Pinkertons, who never captured him in the first place. There is no evidence that the Youngers were jealous of Jesse's fame (which he consciously cultivated through the press), and the rift between them is artificially generated conflict. This is a highly incomplete list of historical inaccuracies.

Cast

Critical reaction

American Outlaws opened to a dismal box office take and mostly negative reviews. Many critics cited a poor sense of time and place as a major cause of the film's problems. Others just dismissed the film as another Young Guns ripoff. [ www.imdb.com]
