The 2009–10 football season marks the 130th year in Watford Football Club's history.

Background

"When I am asked about other clubs, people are questioning my integrity and one thing I have mentioned is I always have integrity. I am loyal and find it disloyal when I am asked about other clubs when I am the Watford manager. There is nothing that has changed in that respect. "

Brendan Rodgers, 22 May 2009[1]

Watford finished the 2008–09 season in 13th place in the table. Previous manager Aidy Boothroyd left the club by mutual consent in November 2008, and was replaced by former Reading and Chelsea academy boss Brendan Rodgers. New arrivals Jack Cork, Don Cowie and Mike Williamson contributed to Watford's improved form between February and May 2009, lifting Watford away from the relegation zone in the closing weeks of the season. The club's financial problems had been well documented, and several changes to the playing staff were anticipated over the summer.

Another person linked with a move away from Vicarage Road was manager Rodgers, who had been linked with a move to former club Reading. He was not happy with the suggestion that he was in talks with Reading, and suggested that his integrity was being questioned.[1] He subsequently joined Reading in June, with Watford receiving an initial £500,000 in compensation. First-team coach and former Watford player Malky Mackay was appointed as his successor.[2] Watford were fairly inactive in the transfer market during pre-season, with Lee Williamson the only high-profile departure in July. Watford then sold striker Tamas Priskin days before the start of the season to Ipswich,[3] and started the season with the future of several players unresolved, including those of top scorer Tommy Smith, highest earner[4] Jobi McAnuff, and club record signing Nathan Ellington.

Season Review

August

Watford's first match was at home to Doncaster Rovers, a team who finished the 2008–09 season level on points with the Hornets. At the start of this season there was also little to separate the two teams, with a debut goal for Danny Graham helping Watford to a 1–1 draw, in a match which also saw Scott Severin make his competitive debut. There was controversy as Doncaster manager Sean O'Driscoll believed that a Dean Shiels shot had crossed the Watford goal line, but he accepted that the officials were in a very difficult position to make the decision.[5]

The League Cup campaign saw Watford drawn away to nearby Barnet. Manager Malky Mackay handed a first competitive start to 17-year-old academy right back Lee Hodson, and a first start of the season to long-serving goalkeeper Richard Lee. The League Two side managed to restrict Watford to a 0–0 scoreline after 90 minutes, before Severin and Mike Williamson scored in extra time to help Watford progress to the next round. The second round draw saw Watford drawn away against 1968 League Cup winners Leeds United.[6]

Watford's next league fixture was at Brammall Lane, where they faced the previous season's defeated playoff finalists Sheffield United. A comfortable 2–0 victory for the hosts ensued, a result which saw Watford slip into the relegation places after the second round of matches. Mackay was disappointed with the goals his side had conceded, describing the defending for the first goal as "very sloppy", and believing his side should have been awarded a free-kick in the build-up to the second goal. He also revealed that the club had received and was considering a transfer offer for Smith, but that he was optimistic that the player would still be at Watford for the game against Nottingham Forest.[7] This proved to be the case, with Smith scoring one goal and creating two more in what proved to be his penultimate appearance for the club. The match finished 4–2 to Watford at the City Ground, with Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverley scoring on his Watford debut as the Hornets picked up their first three points of the season.

Blackpool travelled to Vicarage Road with a record of three draws from three league games under Ian Holloway. This run was extended by virtue of a 2–2 draw, with Smith and Cleverley once again scoring for Watford. Chairman Jimmy Russo confirmed the following day that Reading, managed by Brendan Rodgers, had been in discussion about the possible transfer of Tommy Smith. He insisted that the required valuation had not yet been met, and that he believed Reading had withdrawn from further negotiations.[8] Smith did not travel to Leeds, amid speculation that he was undergoing a medical at the Madejski Stadium.[9][10] For the second time in the competition Watford reached extra time, with Marvin Sordell scoring his first senior goal and Henri Lansbury making his debut, but Robert Snodgrass scored his and Leeds' second to secure a 2–1 victory for the League One leaders.

With less than a week to go until the end of the transfer window, Portsmouth submitted transfer bids for Smith and Williamson. Williamson declared himself unfit to train, play or travel to Swansea, a situation which Mackay later expressed his frustration about.[11] Graham's 66th minute goal was nearly enough for a Watford win, but Swansea's Alan Tate scored a 93rd minute equaliser for a 1–1 draw. Smith's transfer had been confirmed prior to the Swansea match,[12] with Williamson's transfer following a few days later.[13] They departed a Watford side who were sitting in a mid-table position as the transfer window closed.

September

After an international break where seven Watford players featured for their national sides,[14] the team resumed its league campaign with 1-0 wins against struggling Barnsley and Plymouth.[15][16] For both of these victories, Watford's defence consisted entirely of players who had progressed to the first team from Watford's academy, including Dale Bennett, who was making his first two league appearances for the club.

On the day of the Plymouth match it was announced that former Hornets favourite Heiðar Helguson would be returning to the club on loan from Q.P.R..[17] The impact he made on his return was pivotal to the result. With Watford trailing 2–0 at half time to Leicester, Mackay decided to change from a 4–5–1 formation to a 4–4–2, with striker Helguson replacing attacking midfielder Lansbury. Helguson's misplaced shot presented Graham the opportunity to score Watford's first goal, before Helguson scored two goals himself to give Watford a 3–2 lead. Sadly his return was cut short by injury, with Nathan Ellington replacing him for the final ten minutes. Leicester equalised in injury time to take home a point.[18]
