The Apotamkin is a bogeyman creature in Native American mythology.[1] One interpretation of Apotamkin is that it is a myth used to instill fear into children from venturing into areas alone and without parental guidance.[2][3]

The Apotamkin is sometimes considered to be a native Indian version of a vampire. There are different kinds of the Apotamkin around the world.

In fiction

In Twilight, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) finds a website about the Apotamkin as the "cold ones". The website was created specifically for the movie, and never actually posted to the internet. The website was spelled "Apotampkin" whereas the correct spelling is "Apotamkin". The Apotamkin is closer to the vampire in this film than Dracula's style vampires.

Apotamkin of the Maliseet-Passamaquoddy tribe of the Norththeast United States: Maine and Canada: New Brunswick and Quebec (a bogey monster with long hair and huge teeth who, through the fear he generates, keeps small children from straying onto thin, newly frozen ice in the winter, and unguarded beaches in the summer).
