Pipe Dream is a twice-weekly student newspaper of Binghamton University in Vestal, New York. It is printed in tabloid size with full color front and back pages.

History - "The Free Word on Campus"

Founded in 1946, Pipe Dream was originally named The Colonial News but was changed during protests against the Vietnam War. Pipe Dream is and has been since its creation an entirely student-run publication and is one of few in the country to operate without advisors.

Circulation

The newspaper is distributed at Binghamton University's main campus in Vestal, N.Y., and at several spots in the downtown Binghamton area, including the newly built Downtown Center. All copies are distributed openly and are free to the public.

Format

Pipe Dream is published in tabloid size with the following regular sections:
- News: Updates on the latest in campus, local and national news from student journalists. Notably includes Police Watch which details incidents of alleged illegal escapades on campus as filed by campus police.
- Release: Arts & Entertainment section which looks at happenings on campus and popular culture at large.
- Opinion: Oriented towards campus affairs, national and global politics, as well as broader issues of campus life and humor.
- Weekend Warriors: Full color two-page photographic spread in the center of the paper which displays on and off-campus student events and activities.
- Fun Page: General comic and humor section including original comics by Binghamton students, alumnai, and syndicated artists, as well as sudoku and crossword puzzles.
- Classifieds: General classifieds and student-housing rental advertisements.
- Sports: Game coverage and opinion stories on the Division I Binghamton Bearcats. Professional and national sports issues are also covered.

Pipe Dream also publishes special issues for finals week, Spring Fling and the NCAA America East Men's Basketball Tournament (first daily coverage starting Spring 2005), among others.

Fred Handte Memorial Award

Criticism

In 2005, Pipe Bomb, Pipe Dream's yearly April Fool's edition, ran joke stories about a fictional campus transportation service which was a spoof of 'Safe Ride' a free late nite shuttle on campus. Pipe Bomb also featured satirical stories perceived as racist, sexist, and bigoted. Protesters mobilized after the incident and demanded that Pipe Dream either undergo sensitivity training or lose their Student Association chartered status. Without SA chartered status, Pipe Dream would have had to pay its own media insurance premiums. In the end, no action was taken.[1]
