Pete Gleason -- who was a cop and a fireman before he ran unsuccessfully for City Council -- is holding a grudge against Wayne Barrett, the Village Voice reporter who teaches at Columbia University.
Barrett published a damaging exposé on Gleason during last year's campaign in the downtown district that ended with incumbent Alan Gerson losing to Margaret Chin. Among other things, Barrett wrote that Gleason's career as a firefighter wasn't as illustrious as he claimed and that he was often on medical leave.
Now Gleason has written a letter to Columbia President Lee Bollinger, arguing that because Barrett works for the Village Voice, he "derives income from what appears to be the illicit sex trade." Gleason pointed out that a recent edition of the free weekly newspaper contained eight pages of advertising "dedicated to what appears to be the sex trade.

"Black's Law Dictionary defines the word 'pimp' as 'one who obtains customers ("trick") for a whore or prostitute.' Therefore, by definition the Village Voice, as an entity, could be classified as a Publishing Pimp," Gleason wrote.
Gleason noted that many prostitutes are underage and forced into the business. "An individual who derives any monetary compensation from the exploitation and/or slavery of others has no place" at Columbia, Gleason wrote to Bollinger.
He also wondered why NY1 still features Barrett as a talking head. "The station released a much more articulate Dominic Carter for abusing one woman . . . although the Village Voice exploits dozens of women," Gleason told us.
Barrett and Bollinger failed to return Page Six's calls.

Peter Gleason "Black's Law Dictionary defines the word 'pimp' as 'one who obtains customers ("trick") for a whore or prostitute.' Therefore, by definition the Village Voice, as an entity, could be classified as a Publishing Pimp," Gleason wrote.
