The Bella Union was a saloon in Deadwood, South Dakota, and is fictionalized in the HBO television series, Deadwood. Like the television Bella Union, the real saloon was a relatively upscale establishment, where town meetings came to be held; however none of the personnel or goings-on portrayed in the show were actually real. The real Bella Union was built by Tom Miller in 1876, and in November 1878 went bankrupt and became a grocery store downstairs, and a meeting hall named Mechanics' Hall upstairs.

With artists like The Dears, My Latest Novel, Explosions In The Sky, Dirty Three, Mazarin, Howling Bells, Midlake, Laura Veirs, etc etc, this is a true independent label which is hopefully a flagship for Raymonde to continue to discover fantastic talents. As well as running the Bella Union label, he also works as a producer of some of the most exciting new bands on OTHER labels, like Duke Spirit, Clearlake, Helene, etc . he can be contacted at simon@bellaunion.com

History

After releasing records with 4AD for a large part of their career, the Cocteau Twins decided to take a step towards independence and started up the Bella Union record label, through which they could release their own work as well as any collaborative efforts. Unfortunately, not long after this, the Cocteau Twins split up, but instead of letting the newly formed label go under, Simon Raymonde, the band's bassist since 1984 decided to take charge of it. One of the earliest bands to sign on was the Australian post-rock trio, Dirty Three, who continue to release under Bella Union to this day. Other early signees include Francoiz Breut and The Czars. The label fosters bands from a variety of musical genres and is notable for the amount of freedom given to its artists.
