Most students who could afford, migrated to Universities outside the state to pursue careers in technical fields due to lack of facilities in Orissa. A Multidisciplinary Research (MDR) center has been established in the university to promote the synergy of research activities. During span of three years sponsored research has been on the priority and a sum of Rs.148.65 Lakhs have been received from DST, CSIR and other agencies. The All India Council of Technical Education has released a sum of Rs.48.50 Lakhs towards MODROB to SOA University in last three years. The University has also attracted consultancy projects worth Rs.77.50 Lakhs. A sum of Rs.2.525 Lakhs has been received by the University towards the campus connect foundation programs. The University has also received Rs.3.60 Lakhs from Department of Science & Technology (DST) India for conducting International / National Conference / Workshop. Besides the University has sanctioned Rs.13.325 Lakhs for in-house research.

Collaborative research work has been carried out with Institute of Minerals Material Technology, IIT, Kharagpur, Moscow State University, Russia, MEMS Centre (IISc.), and VSS Technological University. Besides, Collaborations have also been established with organizations such as WIPRO, TCS, Mindtree, CIPET, Infosys, Hexaware, Reliance Money and Bhubaneswar Stock Exchange. Institute of Medical Science and SUM Hospital has been collaborating with Govt. of Orissa for Cataract surgery and Sarva Sikhsa Abhijan of Govt. of Orissa and for Cleft surgery with the Smile Train of USA.

This trend was unacceptable to atleast one visionary professor Prof.(Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak who decided to establish an Engineering Instiute in Bhubaneswar.

So also, the University has created a platform with ancillary support to hold international conferences and symposia for knowledge sharing and scholarly interaction on emerging technologies. Some international and national conferences have been organized. Recently, during December, 2009 IEEE International Symposium on Bio-inspired Computing and applications has been organized in the University followed by two national conferences.

The university has integrated its social responsibility as far as health care is concerned. Institute of Medical Science and SUM Hospital has 750 beds and 150 cabins and the students are now oriented with multi-specialty facilities and serve the society totally free of cost. On an average 400 to 450 patients occupy the wards, cabins and ICU. The diagnostic charges are nominal and less than government hospitals. For the employees and the students the SUM hospital charges 50% of the normal fees. In short, the SUM hospital runs on philanthropic basis.
