Zhang Haijie (; born 28 August 1971) is an award-winning television news presenter with TV Channel 8, one of two Mandarin Chinese free-to-air television channels in Singapore. Since May 1, 2008, she has been anchoring News 8 at Ten every weekday night at 10pm (SIN/KUL/HK). Zhang has a reputation for being a highly-respected news anchor.

Zhang is currently a part-time PhD candidate at the Nanyang Technological University's Chinese division, researching the changing political role of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry before Singapore's independence.

Zhang has a blog called Woman In The News.

Career
Prior to relocating to Singapore in 1998, Zhang graduated top of her cohort from the prestigious Communication University of China (formerly known as Beijing Broadcasting Institute) with a Degree in Communications Studies. After graduation, Zhang taught at her alma mater for four years before moving on to journalism.

She then worked in the Shanghai Cable TV Station for one-and-a-half years as a financial-news presenter and producer. Despite having to take a pay cut, she decided to relocate to Singapore as it was her dream to work abroad since young. One week into her initial job as a trainer, where she worked at the MediaCorp's News Department in November 1998, she was asked to anchor the 1pm news bulletin instead.

Due to the viewing public's admiration for her confident and precise news-presenting skills, Zhang was promoted and asked to anchor the 10pm news on TV Channel 8 till 2001. At the end of that year, Zhang resigned from MediaCorp News and crossed over to rival station SPH MediaWorks Channel U. The move drew intense speculation from the media. It was reported that she was unhappy she lost the Best Current Affairs Presenter award to fellow colleague Ng Siew Leng in the 2001 Star Awards; thus, she resigned in just merely four days after the award ceremony was held.

The move to SPH MediaWorks Channel U in 2002 proved extremely successful, where Zhang gained instant fame among the audience and was recognised as one of the best Chinese-language news anchors in Asia. She hosted the acclaimed current-affairs programme, Inside Out, which explores various social issues in Singapore and the region. The programme was very well-received, which set the record with sky-high viewership ratings. Till now, no other Chinese-language current-affairs programme has managed to break the viewership record Inside Out had set. Ever since, Zhang has gained fans following, which earned her the name of a celebrity news anchor.

In 2005, following the merger with MediaCorp TV and MediaCorp Studios, SPH MediaWorks closed down. Zhang was the only news anchor (from SPH MediaWorks) to be invited back to MediaCorp's News department. Many were hoping for Zhang to continue reporting the news at MediaCorp News following the merger as she had excellent news reporting skills. However, she rejected the move - which once again sparked endless talk by the media and public.

During the period of 2005 to 2008, Zhang travelled to places such as Egypt and Europe for six months, after which she gave tutorials to university students. She also appeared in talkshows on UFM1003.

After three years of disappearance from TV as a news anchor, Zhang announced on January 7, 2008, that she would make a surprise comeback on TV Channel 8. She would assume her duties as a news anchor again in February 2008. Her first television appearance after her comeback was on February 15, 2008, where she reported about the government's financial budget and conducted a LIVE broadcast interview in the news studio during the 10pm news bulletin.

Personal Life
Zhang was born in Xi'an, China, where her father was a school principal while her mother worked as an architect. Zhang is the youngest of four children; she has two older sisters and an older brother. She is not married and has been a Singapore citizen since 2003.

Zhang's hobbies include watching the movies, listening to music, reading, as well as disco dancing.

Trivia
* She was previously known as Helen Cheung, but is now using her Chinese name.
* Haijie has been rumoured to be in a relationship with Creative Technology founder Sim Wong Hoo, although neither have commented openly on it. She broke her silence for the first time in a Straits Times interview of March 3, 2008, and said that she has never met him before. Many, too, felt that it was just media speculation.
