Francois Roche is a french architect

Biography

François Roche was born on February 25th, 1961 in Paris. He makes his studies in Châlon-sur-saône. With a mathematical diploma, it enters the preparatory schools in Math Sup and Math Spe to Lyon, which he leaves in medium of course to be registered at the school of architecture of Versailles.

It is graduate of this school into 88. Its beginnings are the occasion to found several groups whose name will evolve/move according to the beings which will compose these structures. Thus the name of the group sails from 89 to 2001 between BoyeRoche 89/Roche* 90/Roche&François 91/Roche, Francois, Lewis, Huber, Roubaud, Perrin 92/Roche, DSV & Sie 93-97/R, DSV & Sie. P 98/R&Sie.D/B: L 99 -2001/and finally R&Sie(n) since 2001.

This will of flouter the name of the structure which carries its work also finds in the fact that it appears only through misadventure, of hybrid character, as he explain, to desidentify the figure of the architect. That can appear incongruous in a company which makes of the author and his physical identity one of the vectors of creation. But it is precisely this dimension which he is obstinated to re-formulate, re-question.

Today François Roche develops at the same time a production structure of architecture, via the limited liability company R&Sie (n), a structure of research “new-territories”, and directs research laboratories like that of Advanced Studio of Columbia-Gsapp, New York.

From 1991 to 1994, François Roche takes an active part in the newspaper Purple Prose, in so much of associated writer. A rebound of the Libération newspaper entitled “the city died” in 1994 will come to enclose this period.

The French Institute of Architecture offers to him in 1993 the possibility of unfolding the whole of its first experiments under the title “Action, March 93” which will give an account of a score of its projects. A monographic work will be published, “the shade of the chameleon”, quickly sold out. Other monographs, like “Spoiled Climate, Corrupted Biotopes, Ten Year After, Fictions Scripts, Bioreboot…” since visible its posterior work made, which they are tangible, fictional or speculative.

This architect is associated with Stéphanie Lavaux, artist, since 1993. It took part in a more abstract way but also activates at the previous period.

Their name R&Sie (n) is resulting from the contraction of the group, but it seems that this name refers to RSI, the event "Real, Symbolique, Imaginary" of Jacques Lacan in 1972. The pronunciation “heresy” which seems completely fortuitous, launched by Bruce Sterling via its Wired review in 2006, finishes by him (their) sticking to the skin.

This architect develops a dimension and a critical esthetics with the hollows of the companies and contemporary conventions. Of the image of the “inside mouvement” which infiltrated the Citroen factories to modify of them the social reports/ratios, in the seventies, he thinks architectural creation like a vector of desalienation, which can be emitted only in the geographical center, territorial of the process of alienation.

The French medium of architecture dedicates a savage hatred to him, and the generation of the national babies boomers issued his work and his person as “not grata” on the French territory, so much so that its work and attitudes in parallel are blacklisted in France and contradictorily largely published and relayed abroad. This architect incarnate perfectly this distortion and schizophrenia who exists between a “ european monarchical republic”, such as he even denounces it and the spheres of the creation, the invention and the research which have of another choice to survive and continue their search to only produce elsewhere or confrontation with the ideas and the practices is still possible.

Its work is organized on three sets of themes

-A fragile architecture which negotiates with the arrow of time, with the transitory one or what seems the being -An operative and fictional architecture which tries Re-scenariser the relation with a situation, with an environment (like principle of reality) -A speculative architecture which works out devices between robotics, mathematics, neurobiology and biochemistry (see for this reason exposure-research “Ive heard butt” like that entitled “an architecture of moods”)
