College of Digital Design

The Southern Taiwan University Of Technology College of Digital Design, established in 2005, has currently three departments: Information and Communication, Visual Communication Design and Multimedia and Entertainment Science. It also offers mater degree in the following three areas: Information and Communication, Multimedia and Computer Entertainment Science, and Digital content and Animation Design. It is the least thing we would like to see that the research and development under the trend of “Digital Revolution” in the past twenty years have come to a bottleneck and need to be re-directed to the right path of software design and integrated media applications, for example, the R & D of consumer electronic products such as cellular phones, digital cameras, digital entertaining systems, and so on. Therefore, it is the scope of the College of Digital Design to cultivate future leaders of the industry in terms of integrated digital applications.

The Media Lab of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) declares that the existing knowledge of communication, information, media communication and technology will receive new definitions as a result of digital integration while the emerging new media are forming a complicated matrix that works on expanding itself to virtually inscribe all the elements into its own domain. And it is the Media Lab’s goal to lead the evolving matrix to a right path. Endorsed by this concept, the College of Digital Design aims at nurturing the future leaders of the potential digital integration industry so Taiwan may build up a well-founded basis for the new age to come.

Cores of Education

It is the cores of education of the College of Digital Design to nourish students’ ability to integrate information, media and entertainment and to generate original digital content, in order to keep pace with the development of information/media/entertainment when it comes to integration, creativity and marketability.

  • Integration: Among the professionals in the information industry, only those with the ability to integrate the existing applications will become the leaders.
  • Creativity: Creativity is the key to enhanced product value. It will turn to sustainable fortune once transformed into Intellectual Property Rights.
  • Marketability: Value of a digital product will increase after each transaction when it is to be assembled with other parts to generate more functions. Through integration marketing or this kind of business model, the accrued profit will be far higher than the outcome of common commodity marketing.

Led by the above core values, the three departments and graduate schools of the College of Digital Design concentrate on the following fields respectively:

College Profile

There are 3 departments at the College in the 2004-2005 academic year.

Vision

The best example is that nowadays people are using 3G cellular phones to make phone calls, do internet browsing, take pictures, tune to personalized music albums or radio, play games, pay bills, and watch TV/films. Three characteristics are drawing our attention in this transforming process from atomic to digital bit transmission:

  • Interactivity: Traditional mass communication is been replaced by interactive communications between people. It means that people are getting used to a full-scale e-lifestyle as in working, learning and entertaining. In another word, digital design is shaping our daily lives by bringing more and more changes to the way we work, learn, and entertain.
  • The rise of a new era characterized by low replication cost and high speed communication: As Internet has substantially lowered the cost of human communication; the replication cost of digital products is next to nothing and can be done in the blink of an eye.
  • The growing importance of creativity: High speed bitwise information has called for great need for information integration, which in turn will enable people of creative thinking to make more contributions to the world. In this way, personal influence may reach to a social level in a very short time.

Inspired by the development of digital content industry including information communication, visual communication and game-related production, the College of Digital Design focuses on nurturing the versatile leaders for the eight major industries of digital content in a way to respond to the national agenda on the prospective information industries.

  • Actively recruiting outstanding professional instructors: Our goals are to prepare students with the abilities to generate new digital services and digital contents as well as the abilities to market their creativity.
  • The scope for international outreach: Through the collaboration with the sister universities worldwide, the College of Digital Design is actively committed in introducing experienced foreign professionals of multi-media and computer game development expertise to lecture or to teach.
  • Integration of software and hardware: With the state-of-the-art virtual studio, digital music studio, studio for game programming, studio for fine-art design on gaming, studio for animation production, laboratory for digital model, and laboratory for plan visual experiment. The College of Digital Design offers our students with the most comprehensive hands-on intern training valuable to their future career.
  • Orienting the future digital professionals with a humanistic mindset: Under the comprehensive instruction and research facility, the College of Digital Design provides the students the best learning environment with a humanistic mindset. That is where humanity, cultural/historical reflection, and international scopes are also the concerns.
  • Encouraging students to create value-add productions by experienced faculty: Through contest participation, the students may accumulate energy essential for creative production not to mention experiences in project execution as a way to prepare them for the real world competition in the future.
  • It is also a vision of the College of Digital Design to provide people in the emerging digital era with new services in daily lives, working, learning and entertaining by cultivating superb new power for the digital content industry pictured in the blueprint of national project.

Education Skeme of the College of Digital Design

Basic courses such as computer and internet application, design and creativity, communication and marketing, Intellectual Property Rights and social norms.

Advanced courses including digital design of teaching material (applied to e-learning), design of digital products, digital design of 3G cellular phone, design of the interface of the 3G cellular phone, design of digital communication, design of digital visual communication, design of wireless e-learning.

Education Orientation

  • Rooted in Taiwan while keeping a global view.
  • Cultivating the ability to appreciate the beautiful and the good while mastering technology.
  • Embracing humanism while staying creative.
  • Being humble while we live and learn.

Prospects

  • It is the plan of the College of Digital Design to establish one Ph. D. program and 2 more master programs in 10 years to come. On one hand, we will actively involve in creative cultural industry projects with domestic funding. On the other hand, globalization is also an objective in our agenda.
  • The College of Digital Design is looking forward to a future thriving with creativity proclaiming a new era of digital revolution.
  • Integrated R & D of digital products: It was the practice of the old days to finish things from basic scientific research to prototype manufacturing in the same lab, like what used to be done in the Bell Labs. The College of Digital Design will start from assisting industry outsourcing or holding international conferences to further corporate with the media labs in the developed countries such as the Britain and the USA. The College of Digital Design will attain the most advanced knowledge and experiences in digital media, communication and marketing by this kind of cooperation. We also hope that in the near future, an e-learning model supported by synchronous/asynchronous teleconferences will become reality as a result of media integration at the College of Digital Design.
