My time on Wikipedia
I created this account on 1 August 2006, and made my first edit on 11 August 2006.
It is now 6 May 2010, and this is my 22,481st edit.
What I do on Wikipedia
40% of my first 22480 edits have been edits to articles with an attempt to improve them, and 42% have been talk page edits, attempting to help improve Wikipedia by discussion and cooperation. I have created very few new articles. However, my amount of effectively new article writing is a little underestimated by the official figures. There is a small number of articles which I have rewritten from scratch or almost from scratch, because the existing article was very poor or only a stub, or I have written a whole article on a topic previously represented only by a redirect, which is really a new article but does not show up as one.
I used to regularly patrol recent changes, edits by new users, and new pages. I still sometimes do so, particularly new pages created by new users, as I find they contain a large proportion of pages which either need significant help or are unsuitable. However, recently most of my patrolling time has been concentrated on vandalism patrol.
Me in real life
My name is not James, nor Watson, nor do I have the middle initial "B". Why JamesBWatson then? No special reason. When I first registered on Wikipedia I intended to use my real name, or a version of it if someone else had already taken it. However, I found myself reading a message warning me that using your real name on Wikipedia might not be a good idea, and, doubtful about it, I picked the first fictitious name I thought of. In one of the Sherlock Holmes stories Dr Watson is referred to as "James" (though elsewhere his name is give as "John"). I have no idea why I put a B in the middle. It mildly amuses me when Wikipedians address me, in a friendly manner as "James" or, more rarely, refer to me contemptuously as "Watson". However, feel free to do either or both of these: I am quite happy with it.
I am a graduate mathematician, and some of my editing has been in mathematical articles. However, this is a fairly small proportion of my total work on Wikipedia.
