Etymology

When horses and other domesticated animals were still being kept within the confines of European cities most larger cities had a market place that was primarily used for the sale of hay for the animals. And the name of the market place, "hay market", lives on in many European cities and in several different languages, including Haymarket in London, England, Heumarkt in Cologne, Germany and Vienna, Austria and Hötorget in Stockholm, Sweden. All three names literally meaning "hay market".
