Black Magic is the upcoming fifth studio album by American rapper 50 Cent.[2] 50 Cent is currently on The Invitation Tour in promotion for the album and his last album.[3] Songs that are on the album will be performed during the tour.[4]

Background

The album was announced as early as May 2009, when 50 Cent said in an interview with MTV that he will be releasing a follow up LP one month after the release of Eminem's Recovery.[5] 50 Cent announced the album's title as Black Magic during a backstage interview.[6] In an interview with MTV, 50 Cent announced that the album will be released during the summer of 2010, "I kind of planned on releasing Black Magic ... I gave myself a goal to try and put it out by the end of the summer, so I'll work that hard on the actual project."[7]

Concept

During a backstage interview, 50 Cent stated that the Black Magic LP will be "more up-tempo, more dance". He was inspired by the Eurodance music played in clubs during his Before I Self Destruct tour in Europe. [8] In an interview with DJ Tim Westwood, 50 Cent stated that the LP wouldiew not be an uncharacteristic techno album, it will be a hip-hop album inspired by dance music; it will still be a "50 Cent album", just written in a different way.[9].

50 Cent describes it as "more soulful" and "more mature" than his past work. For inspiration, 50 Cent stated that he is listening to some of his favorite artists' best songs, including 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. - "I listen to those records to create expectations, It creates a level to me, within myself, of how good the record has to be before I'm ready to launch it." [10] "It’s still got a soulful vibe to it and that’s why I called it Black Magic. I had some Marvin Gaye-inspired stuff, some things that content-wise would feel like something Curtis Mayfield would do from my perspective, and just the choices of how the cadences on the records were like performance music that they did in the past. It feels brand new. If I didn’t tell you it was inspired by that, you wouldn’t know that I got it from that. I didn’t say the same things that they said; it’s just my perspective on what they offered." [11]

For the original concept of his Black Magic album, 50 Cent said he was inspired by dance music while touring overseas. 50 Cent later stated that he as a whole different concept written out for the album, "I have been working on writing to a concept for Black Magic. When I got back to the U.S., I started writing to a different concept. I spoke to Em. He called me when I was starting in Detroit."[12]

Recording

50 Cent stated in an interview that he recorded three songs for the album, while on tour in Europe.[13] 50 Cent later stated that he had recorded a further nineteen songs for the album.[14]
