The Lost Hero is an up-and-coming fantasy-adventure novel based on Greek mythology, written by author Rick Riordan. It is the first book in the The Heroes of Olympus series, the sequel to the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. It is set to be release on October 12, 2010.[1][2][3] Riordan released the first two chapters and the book's cover on the website Camp Half Blood.[1] The book will feature Jason, a possible son of Zeus. The title refers to Percy Jackson, the protagonist of the previous series, who has gone missing.
Synopsis
The Lost Hero uses concepts from ancient Greek mythology in a modern setting and some hints of Roman mythology, as well. It has some similarities in style with the Percy Jackson series.
Plot summary (first two chapters)
Jason is a boy who suffers from amnesia, waking up on a bus, not knowing his age, who he was, or why he was there. He is sitting next to two people to claim to be his friends: Piper and Leo Valdez. It seems that Jason is in the "Wilderness School" (a camp for delinquents), and they are on a field trip to the Grand Canyon. Once there, a storm appears, and one member of the class, Dylan, transforms into a storm spirit. He then summons two more. The supervising teacher, Coach Hedge, reveals himself to be a satyr. After a small fight, the storm spirits escape. Jason discovers that he is a demigod. Two pegasi swoop, carrying two people: Annabeth (from the first series) and Butch. Annabeth gets angry because she had a vision that she would find someone missing one shoe at the Grand Canyon, and thought it to be Percy Jackson, her boyfriend (the main character from the first series). Butch reveals that Percy is missing. It turns out that Jason is the person missing the one shoe, a reference to the original myth of Jason.[4]
Characters
- Jason – The protagonist, a boy who suffers amnesia at the beginning of the book. He may be a son of Zeus.
- Piper – A demigod who claims to be Jason`s girlfriend. Parent undetermend.
- Leo Valdez – A demigod who claims to be Jason's friend when he wakes up from amnesia. He may be a son of Hepheastus dispite Hermes like features.
- Coach Gleeson Hedge – A satyr who was meant to watch over three demigods (Jason, Piper and Leo). He disappears after saving Leo's life twice. He was passingly referenced in The Last Olympian in a letter to Grover Underwood.
- Dylan – An anemoi theullai or "ventus" (storm spirit); who, along with two other storm spirits, attacks the Jason and his friends.
- Annabeth Chase – A demigod daughter of Athena. She is Percy Jackson's girlfriend.
- Butch – The camper who accompanies Annabeth Chase to the Grand Canyon to find Jason, Piper, and Leo.
- Percy Jackson – A demigod son of Poseidon, who was the protagonist in the first Camp Half-Blood series. By the time Jason, Piper and Leo encounter the storm spirits at the Grand Canyon, he has been missing for three days.
