Song

"Only Girl (In the World)" is a song performed by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna. The song was written by Crystal Johnson, Stargate and Sandy Vee, and it was produced by the latter two. The song was released on September 10, 2010, and serves as the lead single from Rihanna's fifth upcoming studio album, Loud. The song is a up-tempo dominant dance-pop song that incorporates elements of Eurodance in its production and beats. Critical reception of the song has been largely positive. It has been praised by critics for its dance-pop and Europop feel to the song and for having a strong chorus. The song's overall production has been praised, largely complementing the choice and vocal work of Rihanna. The song has reached number one in seven countries and the top ten of eight other countries. The track made Radio 1's A-Playlist in the United Kingdom.[2]

Composition

"Only Girl" is a up-tempo dominant dance-pop song that incorporates elements of Eurodance in its production and beats.[3][4] The song features a "heavy whipping bass" with strong use of synths,[4] while the chorus of the song incorporates a "strobing, dance club beat".[3] The song's second verse features a dominant "throbbing bass beat" and the bridge has been described as a "realm of carnal pleasures".[5] Rihanna's vocals throughout the song have been described as "seductive" and reminiscent of a "stronger, sexier version" of her 2007 single, "Don't Stop the Music".[4]

Critical reception

Bill Lamb from About.com gave the song a positive review giving it four and a half out of five stars. Lamb complimented the song for its "towering chorus" and "club ready dance beats". He concluded that "it would be no surprise if this song takes Rihanna back to number one for her second chart topper of the year after "Rude Boy"".[5] Gerrick D. Kennedy from Los Angeles Times gave the song a positive review commenting, "Although we can’t necessarily say Rihanna is back, since she didn't go anywhere--she is making a comeback of sorts." He added, "After taking a more macabre approach to her fourth disc, Rated R, she's gone in a decidedly more 'sassy, fun, flirty [and] energetic' direction....With its club ready bassline and Euro-pop influences, not to mention one heck of an epic chorus, the track is a surefire hit."[6]

Monica Herrera from Billboard complimented the production of the song as well as Rihanna: "[the song] aims squarely for dancefloor domination, as the pop star pours her heart out to one man over a full-throttle production by Norwegian hitmaking duo, Stargate."[7] James Dinh of MTV News was well taken with the song writing, "After going deep and dark on her last album, Rihanna has returned to the dance floor with her new single", "On the high-energy track, Rihanna yearns for her lover to keep her at the center of his attention over a pulsing electro beat. The singer's voice remains silky on the verses, then bursts out on the song's monstrous chorus."[8]

Chart performance

In the United States, "Only Girl" made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number seventy-five.[9] The following week the song jumped to number three giving Rihanna her sixteenth top ten on the chart, and the sixth-best total among women in the chart's 52-year history.[10] After falling to number eight on the chart, it rebound to six, receiving the Airplay Gainer title for the week of October 23, 2010.[11] It even debuted at number one on the Hot Digital Songs chart after selling 249,000 copies.[12] It has become Rihanna's sixth single to debut at number-one and is her eighth number-one single on the chart.[12] On the Pop Songs airplay chart, it has risen to number ten.[13] On the Hot Dance Club Songs chart it debuted at twenty-eight for the week of October 9, 2010,[14] and rose to number seventeen the next week, earning the title of Greatest Gainer.[15] In the week that followed, it got Greatest Gainer title again and jumped to nine.[16] Over on the Hot Dance Airplay chart the song became her eighth #1 - the most since the chart's inception. [17]

In Canada, the song entered the Canadian Hot 100 at number sixty-five on the issue dated September 25, 2010.[18] The following week it received the Airplay Gainer title by jumping to the top position on the chart.[18] In Australia and New Zealand, the song debuted at number one on the Australian Singles Chart[19] and on the New Zealand Singles Chart[20] on September 27, 2010. The song reached the top ten of eleven European countries, reaching number one in Norway, France and Belgium.[21] It reached as far as twenty-six on the European Hot 100 Singles chart and forty-five on the Japan Hot 100.[22][23]

On the German Singles Charts, it's Rihanna's fifth single to reach No. 2.[24][25] This put two of Rihanna's songs simultaneously in the top 3 of the German Singles Chart, with "Love the Way You Lie", her duet with Eminem, at No. 3.[25] On the German Download Charts, Rihanna was even more successful, reaching the pole position (No. 1)[26].

The music video was directed by Anthony Mandler and premiered on October 13, 2010, on MTV. The scenes include Rihanna dancing on a hilltop, lying on a bed of flowers,[27] and dancing around multi-colored balloons. She is also seen riding on a swing that hangs from the sky and then dancing in front of a tree full of blinking lights that adds to the surreal imagery.[28]
