This is a list of characters who appeared in either the novels, comics, or films of the Final Destination franchise. Characters are listed according to the medium they were shown, and are arranged alphabetically.

A screenshot from the film Final Destination showing the main characters of the film: Ms. Valerie Lewton, Billy Hitchcock, Carter Horton, Terry Chaney, Clear Rivers, Alex Browning, and Tod Waggner. These survivors are not only the first survivors enlisted in Death's List, but also are the pioneer survivors of the entire franchise.

Alex Browning

Alexander Chance "Alex" Browning is the protagonist of Final Destination portrayed by Devon Sawa.[1] He is a senior student of Mt. Abraham High, and is one of the students aboard Voleé Airlines Flight 180.[2] He is the seventh survivor of Flight 180 to die.[3]

Alex was born on September 25, 1984 in the fictional town of Mt. Abraham, New York to Ken and Barbara Browning.[4] He has been friends with siblings Tod and George Waggner since childhood, and had been his classmates through high school since then.[4] He is studying at Mt. Abraham High, and is the rival of Carter Horton. He frequently fights with Carter whenever they're together, and often doesn't control his actions. He is one of the students qualified to travel to Paris, France for the school's annual field trip.[2]

In Final Destination, Alex, with his batchmates and teachers, took Voleé Airlines Flight 180 to Paris. While onboard, Alex had an ominous vision of the plane exploding in mid-air. Afer warning everyone about it, he and some of his schoolmates are removed from the plane. While waiting at the airport, Alex witnesses the plane explode as he predicted. FBI Agent Schreck and Agent Weine interview the survivors afterwards, and believe that Alex was a suicide terrorist. While attending the memorial for the victims, Alex notices both agents carefully observing him, andd develops a relationship with Clear Rivers. Tod and Terry Chaney die afterwards, and the Waggner household's anger towards Alex grows further. With the help of Clear, Alex encounters William Bludworth, a mortician who knows about Death than anyone else. Later that night, Alex realizes that Death is claiming back their lives which should've been lost on the plane, and is attacking them according to the order of their deaths on the plane. Alex and Clear plan to save the remaining survivors, but fails on their attempts, with the exception of Carter. Knowing he is next to die, Alex suddenly realizes that Clear will die before him. Finding Clear at her car trapped by livewires, Alex sacrifices himself by touching the wires to let her escape. It is revealed later on that Alex survived the electrocution. Now at Paris, the films ends with Carter saving Alex from a falling neon sign, but eventually resulted to his own death.[5]

In the alternate ending of Final Destination, Alex and Clear had sex on the beach while onto meeting Carter and Billy Hitchcock at their school, resulting to Clear's pregnancy. Later on, Alex dies of his electrocution while saving Clear from the car. Nine months later, Clear gives birth to Alex Jr., and reunites with Carter, knowing that they finally defeated Death.[6][7]

However in Final Destination 2, Clear exposes to Kimberly Corman that Alex died of decapitation by a dislodged brick from a nearby building.[3]

The character's surname was based by Final Destination director James Wong to Tod Browning, who directed both horror classics Dracula and Freaks. Besides Alex, Wong also chose Alex' best friend Tod Waggner as a reference to the director's first name.[8] The character also earned Sawa a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor[9], and a nomination from Blockbuster Enertainment Awards for Favorite Actor in Horror (Internet Only).[citation needed] Moreover, Sawa's performance of Alex received generally positive reviews among critics. Stephen Holden of the New York Times commented that "The disaster and Alex's premonitions set up a heavy-handed fable about death and teenage illusions of invulnerability."[10], while Jami Bernard of the New York Daily News noted that "Sawa is solid as an Everyteen saddled with a rare and unwelcome gift".[11] David Nusair of Reel Film Reviews remarked "Sawa's personable turn as the hero is matched by a uniformly effective supporting cast rife with familiar faces (i.e. Seann William Scott, Brendan Fehr, Tony Todd, etc)..."[12]; while Joe Leydon of Variety pointed out that "Sawa is credible as the second-sighted Alex --- unlike many other actors cast a teen protagonists, he actually looks like he might still be attending high school --- but the supporting players are an uneven bunch."[8] Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle praised Sawa and Ali Larter's pairing, observing that "Larter and Sawa, who becomes more scruffy and wild-eyed as the film progresses, make an appealing pair."[13] Dustin Putman of TheMovieBoy.com praised Sawa's performance, saying:

Devon Sawa, a rising star who put his physical comedy skills to good use in 1999's underseen slasher-comedy, "Idle Hands," is even more of a charismatic presence here. The conflicting emotions he feels for his survival, which he comes to believe he wasn't meant to do, as well as the loss of the other passengers, is superbly and subtly acted on his part. One scene, in which he is watching a news report on the crash and slowly begins to break down is especially realistic and powerful.[14]

Clear Rivers

Clear Marie Rivers is the female protagonist of both Final Destination and Final Destination 2, portrayed by Ali Larter.[1][15] She is a senior student of Mt. Abraham High, and is one of the students aboard Voleé Airlines Flight 180.[2] She is the only survivor of Flight 180 who made it through to Final Destination 2. Whilst in the following film, Clear dies after intervening the new Death's List.[16] She is the seventh and last survivor of Flight 180 to die.[3]

Ali Larter, famous for portraying Niki Sanders in the TV series Heroes, played Clear Rivers in both Final Destination and Final Destination 2. Larter's role is the only character to appear in both films, and the only character to show in at least two films of the franchise.

Clear Marie Rivers was born on 1982 to a couple from the fictional town of Mt. Abraham, New York.[4] Her biological mother died during childbirth, and his father took another wife since then. Clear was very close with her father, since they often went fishing at the woods. However, Clear's father was murdered at a 7-11 store, and Clear's stepmother took another husband. She is also frequently found by other classmates at Mt. Abraham High as mysterious and sly, but is very trustworthy.[5] Clear was one of the students to ride Volée Airlines Flight 180 to Paris, France.[2]

In Final Destination, Alex Browning foresees the plane exploding in mid-air, and warns everyone inside of the accident. Among all passengers of Flight 180, Clear is the only one who believed his statements. Along with him and five others, Clear is removed from the plane, which explodes instantly after departure. At the memorial for those victims, Clear presents Alex a white rose as gratitude for saving her life, starting their relationship. After the deaths of Tod Waggner and Terry Chaney, Alex and Clear meet William Bludworth, who claims about Death and its consequences. After Alex' conclusion of Death retrieving back those lives which should've been lost in the plane, Alex and Clear plot to save the remaining survivor. Still, the pair fails on their attempt, except for Carter Horton. However after Carter's survival, Clear is attacked by Death by trapping her inside her car with livewires. Alex saves Clear by electrocuting himself, and is revealed to have survived his attempt. At the end of the film in Paris, Clear saves Alex from a speeding bus, yet also witnesses Carter's death.[5]

In Final Destination 2, Clear is revealed to be the only Flight 180 survivor who survived, and had locked herself inside the Stonybrook Mental Institution to prevent herself from death. Kimberly Corman, the film's visionary, asks Clear's help for the survival of the drivers from Route 23. With the help of William, Clear and Kimberly learn that only new life can defeat Death, and the infant of survivor Isabella Hudson may stop Death. With Officer Thomas Burke, Clear and Kimberly plan to save the remaining survivors. After the deaths of five survivors of Route 23, Clear, Kimberly, and Thomas avoids the deaths of Isabella and her baby at the Lakeshore Hospital, defeating Death. However, Kimberly had a vision of Isabella's survival from the accident, thus, she wasn't meant to die at all. Understanding the situation, Clear locates Eugene Dix' room at the hospital. Finding him at an oxygenated room, Clear opens the door, loosening the plug of Eugene's defibrillator. The plug completely dettaches, creating a spark that caused a huge fire throughout Eugene's room, killing both Clear and Eugene.[3]

Larter's role in Final Destination gathered mixed reviews among critics. Jami Bernard of the New York Daily News said that "Ali Larter plays the only person who believes in [Sawa] - her name is Clear, which sums up the movie's entire philosophy of character development."[11]; while Joe Leydon of Variety claimed that "Larter never seems to be entirely at ease in her part, and it's hard to shake the suspicion that one key scene --- the first one-on-one conversation between Alex and Clear --- is annoyingly jagged because of an attempted editing room salvage job."[8] Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle noted Alex and Clear's relationship: "Larter and Sawa, who becomes more scruffy and wild-eyed as the film progresses, make an appealing pair."[13]; while Dustin Putman of TheMovieBoy.com praised Larter's role:

Ali Larter (1999's "Varsity Blues"), in the other central role, is also effective, as a girl whose life was going well until her father died in a convenience store shooting years before, leaving her stuck with an increasingly uncaring mother who married a loutish man--the exact opposite of her now-deceased father.[14]

Carter Horton

Carter Horton is the rival of Alex Browning in Final Destination, portrayed by Kerr Smith.[1] He is a football jockey of Mt. Abraham High, and is dating Terry Chaney. He was one of the students aboard Volée Airlines Flight 180 who was removed off the plane due to the confusion he had caused with Alex Browning. Hence, if it wasn't for his actions, his other schoolmates would have suffered their deaths in the doomed plane.[2] Carter is the fifth survivor of Flight 180 to die.[5]

Carter Horton was born in Mt. Abraham, New York.[4] He is very arrogant, competitive and vengeful, as proven by his disgust with Alex since they met each other. He is also athletic, wherein he is their school's football quarterback. He is dating cheerleader Terry, and the two have shown popularity among their schoolmates. Carter was qualified to join the field trip to Paris, France through Volée Airlines Flight 180.[2]

In Final Destination, Alex had a vision of the plane exploding after take-off, killing everyone onboard. However, after warning everyone, Carter causes a stir with him considering it was a prank. The commotion resulted to the removal of them and some others from the plane. Annoyed by his exclusion, Carter battles with Alex at the airport, just in time to witness the plane explode. Thinking Alex caused the explosion, Carter almost fights with him at the memorial. Likewise, Carter blames Alex for Tod Waggner's death, resulting to Terry's exit and death. Since then, Carter became more concern about Terry and Death itself; and when it was his time, Carter bravefully faces his death by stalling his car at the middle of rail tracks. Yet his false suicide attempt almost turns real when the train nearly smashes him inside his vehicle. Later on, after a chain of events, Alex, Carter, and Clear Rivers have dinner in Paris, finally defeaing Death. Nonetheless, Death strikes back by ramming Alex with a bus and a falling neon sign, yet this was prevented by both Clear and Carter. However, the neon sign flings back, smashing Carter.[5]

In the alternate ending of Final Destination, months after Alex' death, Carter joins Clear and her son Alex Jr. after realizing that they both finally defeated Death.[6][7]

Smith's performance has received mixed reviews from critics. Joe Leydon of Variety complimented his performance, saying that "Smith once again displays attention-grabbing screen presence in a secondary role".[8]

Billy Hitchcock

Seann William Scott, famous for portraying Steve Stifler in the American Pie franchise, played Billy Hitchcock in Final Destination. Billy is the only Flight 180 survivor who neither believed Alex Browning or joined/stopped the fight between Alex and Carter Horton, but rather cannot make his way by those who were forced out of the plane; hence, his survival was only an effect of accident.

William "Billy" Hitchcock is one of the survivors from the Flight 180 explosion in Final Destination, portrayed by Seann William Scott. He is very cheerful and foolish, commonly being the comic relief of the film. While aboard the plane, Billy is caught between the brawl of Alex Browning and Carter Horton, resulting to his removal from the plane.[2] Billy is the fourth survivor of Flight 180 to die.[5]

William Hitchcock was born somewhere in New York.[4] Although quite boring and nerdy, he is also very foolish and clumsy. This caused himself as the main target of Carter in bullying. He usually travels through his bicycle, especially to his educational institution Mt. Abraham High. He is somehow smart, and is already enough to be sent to Paris for their school's field trip.[2]

Like Alex and Carter, the character, is thrown off board the plane before it explodes.[5]

Alex and Clear try to convince Carter that Death is after them. In an attempt to defy this by choosing his own death, he stops the car, with Alex, Clear and Billy on it, to prove that he is in control of his own death. Carter is saved, but a piece of the destroyed car spins toward Hitchcock, who dies instantly.[3]

Valerie Lewton

Valerie "Val" Lewton, or simply Ms. Lewton, is one of the survivors in Final Destination, portrayed by Kristen Cloke. Among all Flight 180 survivors, she is the most affected person, since she feels guilty for convincing Larry Murnau to stay inside the doomed flight. She stays behind to accompany those students who were forced out of the plane. She is the third survivor of Flight 180 to die.[2]

Valerie Lewton was born somewhere in New York. She is very intelligent, but is very sensitive and snobbish. She took a degree in Education, as implied by her job in Mt. Abraham High.[4] Along with fellow faculty members and staff, she was required to accompany the students to Paris for the field trip.[5]

As the students are forced off the plane, the character follows, instead of the other teacher Larry Murnau, who was originally intended on going.[5]

When the survivors begin to die, she attempts to escape the town.[3] But as she prepares to leave, a cracked mugged leaks vodka on the floor, which shortcircuits the computer, causing the monitor to explode, sending glass shards into her neck. The computer then explodes, setting the entire room on fire. She grabs for a towel, which causes knives to fall onto floor. As Alex attempts to help her, she is accidentally stabbed. The fire causes the room to explode, right after Alex escapes.[5]

Terry Chaney

Theresa "Terry" Chaney is one of the survivors in Final Destination, portrayed by Amanda Detmer. She is the girlfriend of Carter Horton. She is the second survivor of Flight 180 to die.[2]

Theresa Chaney was born somewhere in New York. She is very sassy and snobbish, but is rather kind and sweet toward her boyfriend Carter Horton. At first, she was reluctant to go to Paris, but in the end joins Carter to secure him from temper issues with Alex Browning.[4]

After the explosion of the airplane, Terry is ignored at Carter's conflicts with Carter. In a second encounter in a coffee shop, the character loses her temper. She said she had enough with Carter and that he can "drop fucking dead" while walking blindlessly on the road. The character turns around, just in time to see a speeding bus ram into her.[5] In Final Destination 2 that one of the passengers on this bus was Kat Jennings. Terry's death prevented Kat from a bed and breakfast leakage blocks away.[3]

Tod Waggner

Tod Waggner is one of the survivors in Final Destination, portrayed by Chad Donella. He is the best friend of Alex Browning. Tod is not only the first survivor of Flight 180 to die, but also is the first person to die in the Death List of the entire franchise.[4][2]

In the film, after the memorial for the casualties of the plane explosion, the character accidentally slits his throat with the razor, while in the bathroom. Distracted, he does not realise a leakage has formed a puddle near him, Waggner slips and lands on the clothesline wire which wraps around his throat. Waggner falls on the slippery bathtub which outbalances him more, already grasping for air. He sees the nail clipper on the shelf, but it is too late and he dies afterwards.[5] In Final Destination 2, his death was televised on different networks, in which Kimberly Corman watches his aftermath (which prevented Kimberly from a hijacking that killed her mother).[3]

William Bludworth

William Bludworth is a mortician who appears in Final Destination and Final Destination 2. In both films he is portrayed by Tony Todd. In Final Destination when Alex and Clear go to see Tod's body, they encounter Bludworth who tells them that Death has a list and will go to any means to kill everyone on it. In the sequel, Clear take Kimberly Corman and Thomas Burke to see Bludworth. There, Bludworth tells them that Death can be defeated only by new life. He is set to reappear in Final Destination 5.

Final Destination 2

Kimberly Corman

Kimberly Corman is the main character of Final Destination 2 portrayed by A.J. Cook. She is a college student from Lakeview, New York who was originally planning for a spring break to Daytona Beach, Florida with her friends. While driving on Highway 23, Kimberly had a vision of a pile-up which killed many travelers along the road, including herself. Upon realizing that the event is not happening yet, Kimberly stalls her car to keep drivers from going further. For this reason, Kimberly is brought to a police station with several other drivers, preventing themselves from the grisly accident on the highway. However, after realizing that Death is still after them, Kimberly teams up with Clear Rivers, a survivor from Flight 180 which occurred exactly a year before, and Thomas Burke to save the lives of those who had evaded their end. She was supposed to be killed along side her mother in a mugging but was caught up watching a news article about Tod Waggner dying. Although she survived on this film, her death happened between this film and its following sequel.[16][17]. She was killed along Thomas in a wood chipper accident. He was originally meant to die in a shoot out, but was dispatched to a call when Billy Hitchcock, survivor of Flight 180, was killed. There attempts fail and eventually leave only Thomas and Kimberly. Thomas saves Kimberly after she drowns. Although he is alive at the end of the film, it is revealed in an alternate scene in Final Destination 3 that he and Kimberly were both killed in a wood chipper accident. He was the seventh survivor from the Highway 23 pile up to die.

Eugene Dix

Eugene Dix (portrayed by T.C. Carson) was driving his motorcycle on Highway 23 when Kimberly Corman blocked traffic. He was meant to die in the accident but was saved (temporarily) by Kimberly. He does not believe death is after him until he witnesses Nora Carpenter be decapitated in an elevator accident. He tries to commit suicide but being it isn't his turn to die, he can't. It is revealed that Eugene would've been stabbed and killed by one of his students, but was forced to replace Valerie Lewton. Eugene is with the other survivors in a car when it crashes. He is injured and rushed to the hospital. One of the oxygen tanks leaks and when Clear Rivers opens the door to his room it causes a spark in the outlet. It causes an explosion that kills Eugene and Clear. He was the sixth survivor to die.

While in the field where Kat Jennings' car crashed he is off snorting coke. When Kat dies she drops a cigarette that rolls in a PVC pipe in the ground setting a fire because gas from a news van had leaked into it. The news van explodes and sends two post flying with barbed wire between them. Rory is severed into three halves and killed. He is the fifth survivor from the pile up to die.

She is quick to believe death is after her. While driving with four other survivors from the pile up and one from Flight 180 it is revealed she was meant to die in a gas leak but was unable to make it because the bus she was on killed Flight 180 survivor Terry Chaney. The car crashes and pins Kat in the car. A sharp PVC pipe is protruding from her head rest.
