Filming began in Oahu, Hawaii in November 2010. Serving as executive producers are Michael Bostick, Evan Turner, Marcus Viscidi, Richard Brener, Samuel J. Brown and Michael Disco. In January 2011 filming moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. The production chose EUE/Screen Gems North Carolina in part because of multiple stages with the capability for large green screen and large set construction as well as the unique special effects tanks. The action-adventure sequel, directed by Brad Peyton and featuring Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman and Kristin Davis, is shooting exterior locations in Hawaii until Christmas.[2][3] The first pictures from the set were revealed on November 10, 2010.[4] The film is being directed by Brad Peyton. The film's visual effects supervisor is Boyd Shermis, and the director of photography is David Tattersall. The film is being shot in Digital 3D.[5]

Location

Four months prior to filming, location manager, Colleen Gibbons, already began scouting for locations. Lots of Internet research and photos from local film studios gave her an initial idea of suitable outdoor spots for various scenes. Then Gibbons visited each tentative location. Gibbons tells Midweek, “We’re kind of like turtles, we have to carry everything with us,” she explains. “When you’re a movie company, moving 200 people around, with dozens of trucks, tractor-trailers, trailers and 40-footers - you have a lot of equipment on the ground and a lot of people, so there are places that are more difficult for us to access.” All in all, the movie filmed at about eight Oahu locations, but predominantly in various parts of Waimea Valley and Kualoa Ranch.[5]
