On his time in Ireland Padraig reflects: “Shamrock Rovers is the biggest and best club in Ireland by a distance and to have come all the way up through the ranks is something that I am very proud of. If you speak to anyone in Ireland they have a good memory of Rovers and it was a great opportunity for me to play for them. Hopefully, I will return and play for Rovers again some day.” [http://www.nimilkcup.org/?module=datalistdetail&itemid=f96e272d-3e65-4706-b542-4816128c68a0].

Pádraig Amond (born 15 April 1988)[1] is an Irish football striker, who currently plays for Paços de Ferreira in the Portuguese Liga [1].

Biography

Amond joined Shamrock Rovers in 1999 and progressed through the schoolboy ranks of the club. He represented the club in the Milk Cup in both 2003 and 2004 and was an instant hit in assisting Shamrock Rovers to the quarter finals that very first year. In fact, he scored the Hoops’ first goal of the tournament in 2003 in an impressive 3-1 defeat of Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in the Junior Section game at The Warren, Portstewart. In the 2004 tournament he lined out with his brother John.

He was promoted to the senior squad for the 2006 season, making his League of Ireland debut coming on as a substitute against Athlone Town on 16 March 2006. He made ten appearances, eight from the bench, for the whole season and scored his only goal against Finn Harps in September 2006.

Pádraig is also a talented hurler and has represented his native county of Carlow at minor (under-18) level in their run to the Leinster Final at Gaelic Athletic Association headquarters Croke Park in 2006.

Amond joined Kildare County on season long loan for the 2007 season. He became the first opposition player to score at Athlone Town's new Stadium at Lissywollen in the Eircom League Division One game between Kildare County and Athlone town on the 16th of April 2007. Amond scored twice in what was Kildare County's first victory of the season. He went on to score 5 goals for Kildare before being recalled by Shamrock Rovers's manager Pat Scully[2].

In recognition of his sporting achievements he was awarded the Carlow Sportsperson of the Year Award for soccer.

Pádraig scored Shamrock Rovers 4000th League goal and his first goal for the club in a 4-0 win over Galway United on the 14th of September [3].

Scored his first goal of the 2008 season on the 18th of April [4] and followed that up with another three weeks later [5].

Earned his first cap with team mate Simon Madden (footballer) for the Republic of Ireland U21 game in Austria on the 19th of August 2008 [6].

Earned his second cap in Bulgaria [7]. He made his first start against Portugal for his third cap [8]. Earned his fourth cap in October 2008 in Lithuania [9].

Finished the 2008 season as Shamrock Rovers top goalscorer with 9 league goals [10]. Also picked up the club Young Player of the Year award [11].

On the 2nd October 2009 Amond scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over rivals Bohemians to put Shamrock Rovers top of the table [12].

In the winter of 2009, as Shamrock Rovers were looking to strengthen their squad for a title challenge, Padraig Amond was deemed surplus to requirements by Michael O'Neill and his contract was not renewed with the Tallaght outfit. It didn't take long for Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook to sign up the Carlow native and he was named as Sligo's second signing of the close season [13].

In September 2010 Padraig signed for Portuguese top flight side Paços de Ferreira for an undisclosed fee [14]. He made his debut as a substitute in a home game against S.C. Braga on 19 September, helping his side haul back a two goal deficit and draw the match 2-2. He made his second start, and scored his first goal for Paços de Ferreira against Leixoes in the domestic cup on 11 November.[2]
