Star Wars Combine is a real-time massively multiplayer online browser game, set in the Star Wars universe. Combine is not licensed by Lucas Arts, but is permitted to use the setting.[1]

Now at its twelth year of existence, Star Wars Combine (SWC) has several characteristics that make it very peculiar in comparison to many other games.
As a matter of fact, the graphic interface of this browser game is only a means to facilitate the meeting of the massive international community on the forums and IRC channels.
It is a common shared feeling to be lost after one's own character is created, and help, suggestions, tips from others are necessary even to leave the planet. Joining a faction (corresponding to gangs or guilds in other games) is not only recommended, but it is also a necessary step to understand and master every aspect of this game.

While travelling in hyperspace (a task that could take hours, days or even weeks depending on distance and ship's technology level) players interact in their forums and chatrooms, planning the next operation, roleplaying their character, trading in the open market or in the black market, organizing events and taking part in the life of their faction.
As Josh Augustine states in his article: "The amount of free spontaneous creativity within this game is mind-numbing, dwarfing even the machinations behind EVE Online."

However, this game is not for the restless people: patience is an essential element of this simulation. Every action takes time, and the character's creation is a more serious step here than elsewhere because characters are thought to live here for years. There are many veterans who have been playing for about nine years.
The purpose of this slower pace is also devised in order to allow players –- who are spread all over the world and covering all time zones -- to have the time to respond to events happening around them while being offline.
The player's character is present in this galaxy both if the player is online and offline. Therefore, being killed is always possible, and death is permanent. This means you lose every possession, and are compelled to recreate a new character, that has its own background and story, different from the previous one.
