Catherine Ellen Shipton (27 March 1957 in Lewisham Hospital, South London), is an English actress.

Biography

Born to Irish parents, she was the seventh and second girl of nine children, where only four of her brothers survived. Shipton was raised as a Roman Catholic, and was educated in a convent in South London. She studied two languages and journalism, but drama teacher told her potential to be an actress, and she resultantly trained at Rose Bruford College from 1977 to 1980.[1]

Career

During a five year career after graduation which involved long periods of unemployment, she trained as an aerobics instructor as a secondary career. Originally applying for the role of Susie the receptionist on BBC One's Casualty, she wanted to be a nurse and was resultantly on January 11, 1986 cast as Sister Lisa "Duffy" Duffin. She played the role for the first eight series, before taking a four series break, and returning for a further four series.[1]
