"Bass Down Low"
Song

"Bass Down Low" is a song by American recording artist Dev. It was produced by The Cataracs, who are also featured on the track. "Bass Down Low" reached number sixty-one on the US Billboard Hot 100, and thirty-five on the Canadian Hot 100.

Background

"Bass Down Low" was written by Dev along with The Cataracs, who produced the song. It was originally a track by The Cataracs featuring Dev, but Dev was made the main artist because they believed it presented her.[1] She spoke of the song in an interview with Artistdirect, saying, "Well, it's kinda sassy, it's fun. It would just be a good follow-up to 'G6.' We thought it fit really well. You know, throw out some little radio bangers."[1]

Composition and critical reception

"Bass Down Low" is an electropop song,[2] featuring skittering synths.[3] According to music website Idolator, the song speaks of "taking shots and other various forms of debauchery."[4] The line "And we sip champagne when we thirsty" is a tribute to The Notorious B.I.G. and his song "Juicy".[5] The song begins with Dev singing "If you wanna get with me, there's some things you gotta know / I like my beats fast and my bass down low."[3] During the song's bridge, The Cataracs mention The Black Eyed Peas and their song "Boom Boom Pow".[2]

Crowning it the fourth best single of December 2010, Ed Masley of The Arizona Republic compared the song to Kesha's "Tik Tok", but wrote that "every other element of "Bass Down Low" feels custom-made for squeezing 15 extra minutes off that "Tik Tok" clock. It's there in the deadpan delivery of the spoken-word intro ("If you wanna get with me, there's some things you gotta know/I like my beats fast and my bass down low"). It's there in the throbbing electro-pop groove. And it's certainly there in the Valley Girl swagger of the vocals, especially the line "Quit frontin' while your husband tryin' to get his mitts in my oven."[2] The writer also noted similarities to Far East Movement's "Like a G6", which features The Cataracs and Dev.[2]

Chart performance

"Bass Down Low" debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 on the week ending December 25, 2010 at number ninety-four.[6] The following week, it rose to number seventy-four.[6] It dropped out of the chart next week,[7] and re-entered it at number ninety-nine the following week.[6] On the week ending February 5, 2011, it reached its peak of number sixty-four.[6] It has spent a total of 12 weeks on the Hot 100. It also peaked at number two on Heatseekers Songs.[6] The song debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 on the week ending January 1, 2011 at number forty-nine, becoming the week's highest debut.[8] On the week ending February 5, 2011, it rose to number thirty-six, which became its peak.[9] The song entered the UK Singles Chart at #66 on week ending 7th May 2011, mostly due to sales of the remix featuring Tinie Tempah.

Music video

The song's music video was directed by Ethan Lader, who also directed Dev's clip for "Booty Bounce".[10][11] The "Bass Down Low" video takes place in an underground club.[4] According to Video Static, Dev is "acting as a sort of leader in a perverted version of the freeze game."[11]

As of April 26, 2011, the music video has over 12 million hits on Youtube.
