== Gypsy punk? ==

How are they "Gypsy" punk when only one of them is '''part''' Gypsy and the music isn't even Gypsy.
Surely they are Chinese punk more than Gypsy punk as one of them is full Chinese?

Isn't this politically incorrect? Aren't we supposed to above this?

Are they actually Roma?

The question came up regarding including them in a list of notable Roma musicians. Article says "their sound is inspired by Gypsy music", but doesn't say if the members are actually gypsies or not. Anyone know for sure? +ILike2BeAnonymous 19:31, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Frontman Eugene Hutz is part Roma, possibly on his father's side. Joe Stubbs 19:27, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I seem to remember reading that Hutz is fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, and an East European Gypsy language, not necessarily Romani. I can't recall where, but it was probably on the GB web site or some review quoted there. Michael Z. 2006-08-15 19:42 Z
Hutz is part Roma, it's been mentioned in several interviews. For example in Planet Magazine #37 he's described as "Half-Ukrainian half-Roma", the whole interview and others can be seen here Gogol Bordello Press blog. Hope that's a help. Joe Stubbs 19:33, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Revision

This article is in desperate need of revision. the first paragraph is filled with POV, and the "regarding the music" section does not belong here. Every Dog's Day 04:12, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why are these sentences not allowed: "unique costumes (including paper hats handed out to the audience before the show), slingshots between legs, twisted vaudevillian performers, and crowd surfing on a bass drum." and "which delivers messages of social and political commentary"? They're not opinion, they're true.

Fire Bucket

ok, i don't have any problems with the article, i just want to know how Hutz "plays" a fire bucket.

someone please tell me, because it sounds awesome. AceGT09

He uses it as a percussion instrument, beating it like a drum with drumsticks. An example of this can be heard in (I believe) the song Not A Crime. ---Little TinyFish Dec. 1, 2006
oh, looking back that should have been obvious, seeing as i play percussion. i figured it was something really weird to be a firebucket specifically.

AceGT09

I just watched him play at Glastonbury 2007, and he does a couple of variations with the fire bucket, sticking it on top of the microphone and striking it, striking it with the microphone etc... It is, it has to be said, brilliant!

Warped 2006

Did the band actually play any dates, or did they cancel all shows due to injury? Little tinyfish 02:59, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

I'd like to mention who's in the picture that's in the info box right now. Can anyone identify who the accordian player is? I don't recognize him. Zytsef 22:56, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind. It's Yuri Lemeshev. Was lucky enough to find a picture of him on Google. Wearing the same shades even. Zytsef 07:05, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First section

I've added a rewrite tag to the first section of the article. It's very difficult to read-- not in paragraphs, not quite a list-- and is basically a collection thoughts that don't flow together. - superβεεcat  18:09, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with that. The first paragraph is a decent intro though, so I've seperated it and moved your banner and the miscellany into a new section. --kingboyk 12:47, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Missing citations from deleted part (Aug 2, 2007 edit) in "History and Influences" section can be found at an interview, audio clips at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5371385. I had found the old first paragraph rather informative, but as I'm not sure what WikiPedia's policy for citing such sources is, I'm not adding it back. -- 71.247.6.51 14:48, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I went ahead and updated the article with the proper references (among other things). Little tinyfish 01:07, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lineup

If anyone has the information, could we get a lineup table with dates please? --kingboyk 12:48, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pedro Erazo

I am unfamiliar with this character. Is he in the band, or did he just assist with the album? Little tinyfish 02:50, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know he's contributed vocals on at least one track on each of Super Taranta!, Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike and East Infection. He also tours with them to perform those tracks. I'm not sure he's really considered part of the band. He's usually credited with providing additional or guest vocals. Zytsef 05:22, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
He's not listed as being a part of the band on their MySpace page. Unless you can provide a decent source that he's non just a guest, we should probably relegate him to a new section. Little tinyfish 00:17, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and removed him completely from the article. Anyone with knowledge about Erazo and some sources might consider adding some prose about him, maybe in the collaborations section. Zytsef 06:08, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm the one who added him to the members list in the first place. Here's a link to the article where Eugene first really formally introduced him as a member of the band. He's mentioned him lately in a few articles (I could find them if you need them) when he's talking about the members of the band and how they're from all over the world...he always includes a blurb about their "inca indian from ecuador." Pedro's been helping out on the past few albums (east infection, gypsy punks, super taranta), and he performs as their MC at every US show (and will hopefully start touring overseas as soon as some visa issues are taken care of). He's in all of their recent press pictures (the newly photographed ones, though not every article has been using those...for an example, see the new Songlines magazine...). He went on Letterman with them...he'll be on Jimmy Kimmel with them this Tuesday....he is most definately a part of the band....

Thanks for that. I went ahead and added him back in and cited the source. I'll never doubt you again. ;-P Little tinyfish 02:14, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome.  :) The more the merrier, right? Darkcrystalcky 02:29, 9 September 2007 (UTC)darkcrystalcky[reply]

Oliver Charles

The band has a new drummer, Oliver Charles, at least as of July 24, 2009. http://tampastica.wordpress.com/2009/07/24/gogol-bordello-man-goes-rio-grand/ Ericvil (talk) 02:46, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They are an insult to the Romani people and what the Romani culture is all about

They are Pikeys. If a Rom carried on behaving the way they do amongst the tribe then they would be caste out and expected to stay away from the rest of the tribe from that day on. In Romani culture it is wrong to be crude or disrespectful in front of a woman.

He may be part Romani but his attitudes and manners certainly aren't, Many Romani people feel very strongly against this band trying to sell themselves under the Romani banner.

Stick to being a punk band from New York and stop disrespecting the true Romani people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.34.227.166 (talk) 20:33, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe if we had a source to this effect it would be a valuable addition to the article. As it stands I can't find a negative reference to GB from the Romani community anywhere. --Zytsef 01:52, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Borat & Triumph?!

Guys - it's just not it... Eugene has his voice shredded through vodka and cigs - true; Eugene is not a falsseto shemale-james-blunt singer - also true. But i think that that Kenneth Partridge's citation is just ain't got a fit with all of this.

I love those two comedy figures (well... actually only Triumph), but in the other hand - to say that Borat has a simillar voice to Eugene's when Sasha Baron Cohen is making fun out of the easten-european on his material?! Not appropiriate, in my opinion...

And it sounds like a citation that tries to concienve the ones who listen to junk music to get a listening to Gogol.

Please cut it out.

And my english... well, i guest i'm not suprime with it ^_^ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.70.128.60 (talk) 07:06, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, that's like saying a Mexican musician sounds like Speedy Gonzales. --~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.238.248.173 (talk) 10:22, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

wristcutters

the film "wristcutters: a love story" should be added under the film section. I would do it, but i don't know how.

I really don't think it belongs there. None of the band members appeared in the film, and that's really what that section is being used for: films the band has appeared in. If you can find a good refence for the claim that one of the characters in the movie is based on Eugene Hutz I invite you to include that information in the article for him. Moreover, the fact that one of GB's songs is used in the soundtrack is already mentioned in this article; something I'm wary about, since a lot of their songs have been used in a lot of soundtracks and I don't really think this should be a list of them. Zytsef (talk) 22:48, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I recently cleaned up this article's external links section in accordance with our guidelines and there were some links that I felt didn't belong but they should be considered for future sourcing, as they are reliable sources. If anyone is interested in expanding this article, these may be of some assistance.
