The Far Eastern University Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS) has been considered as one of the Philippine's lead producers of prominent television and radio broadcasters, writers, actors, directors, including professionals in the field of science, such as biology, psychology, and technologists. Situated within the Far Eastern University, Manila Campus, and currently headed by Dr. Jaime An Lim as the institute's dean, the IAS continues to educate students within the field of their interest related to language, literature, mass communications, information technology, life sciences and political science.
The Institute of Arts and Sciences integrates the humanities and the empirical sciences as the key to a well rounded education for its students. The Institute envisions globally competitive graduates and highly principled leaders who are lifelong learners, problem solvers, effective communicators, and community-oriented and culturally rooted citizens.
The Institute of Arts and Sciences was re-named after Far Eastern College upon its merger with the Institute of Accounting, Business and Finance to create Far Eastern University. It is one of the older institutes of FEU after IABF.
The institute was headed through the years by educators who distinguished themselves in their respective fields. The past deans include Francisco M. Africa, Alejandro Roces and Wilson Faderon. Jaime An Lim, a Palanca award-winning poet and writer and a Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher in 2003, is the present dean.
The prestige of the Institute does not only lie in its enrolment and modern facilities alone, but in the leadership of its graduates here and abroad. As it offers a truly liberal education, the Institute feels it has helped them achieve success.
The institute started with only general liberal arts course and pre-law course. At present, it offers five arts programs, three science programs, and three Masteral Programs. The re-inclusion of BS Medical Technology, for a time handled by Institute of Nursing, rounds the number of curricular offerings of IAS to twelve programs.
Previous Deans of the Institute
- Francisco M. Africa - the first dean of the IAS, awarded Dean Emeritus by the university, an author and educator
- Alejandro R. Roces - a writer and an artist, successor of Dean Africa after his retirement in 1956, appointed by President Diosdado Macapagal as secretary of the Philippine Department of Education
- Dr. Josephine Cojuangco Reyes - took post-graduate studies at Teacher's College, Columbia University, an Institute of Arts and Sciences alumna, 7th President of Far Eastern University
- Nicanor B. Agudo - distinguished thespian and highly engaging educator, successor of the former Pres. Cojuanco Reyes
- Dr. Wilson F. Faderon - a University of the Philippines and University of Wisconsin–Madison alumnus awarded with his doctorate degree from the said institutions
- Angel O. Abalya - an Ateneo de Manila University and Williams College masteral graduate
- Dr. Zenaida S. Martinez - associate dean and successor of Prof. Abalya after his early death due to heart ailments in February 11, 2003[1]
