Bassnectar is the name of the musical/sensory project led by Lorin Ashton, who is considered by some to be "Bassnectar" incarnate. Ashton is a freeform electronic music and dubstep artist, DJ, and producer based in Santa Cruz, California.[1] He is known for his live performances and light shows, and actively supports the non-profit group Conscious Alliance.[2]

Style

Eclectic electronic mix, combining mainstream music with underground dubs and the common "wobble" bass used by many dubstep musicians. [3] Many songs contain multiple techniques of composition, such as: a sudden shift from double to triple meter, a sudden drop into half-timings, multiple layers of synthesized arpeggios, rappers, singers, vocal samples pitch-shifted and time-stretched.[4] The most utilized characteristic is focus on various tempos.[5] He uses the broad spectrum of speeds in electronic genres to create what he calls, "omni-tempo maximalism," and describes it as, "an amalgamation of every sound I've ever heard, mixed with ultra wicked basslines."[6]

Bass Center Festival

In October 2010, Bassnectar announced the line-up for his first headlining perennial festival, which took place at the First Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado.[7] The event, which sold out, also featured circus performers and musical collaborators. Among the opening acts were Brother Ali, Emancipator, Nosaj Thing, That 1 Guy, and Dan Deacon.

At the end of 2010, Bassnectar announced additional winter tour dates including the initial lineup for the upcoming second Bass Center Festival to be held at the Asheville Civic Center in Asheville, NC on February 19, 2011.[8] The event sold out weeks before and filled the venue’s capacity with approximately 8,000 attendees. The opening performers included The Glitch Mob, Ana Sia, and Filastine.

In 2011, Bassnectar made his first appearance in France for the Electronic Beaches in Cannes where approximately 6000 people attended.
