House of Night is a series of vampire-based fantasy novels by American author P. C. Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast. It follows the adventures of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen-year-old girl who has just become a fledgling Vampyre and is required to attend the House of Night boarding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The series has been on the New York Times Best Seller list for 63 weeks[1] and there are over seven million copies in print in North America alone.[2] The sixth novel, Tempted, which went on sale on October 27, 2009 with a first printing of a million copies,[3] entered the USA Today bestseller list that week at #1.[4] In January, 2010, Gezeichnet, a German translation of Marked, reached the #1 spot on the Der Spiegel bestseller list.[5] The series has so far sold more than ten million books[6] in 39 countries.[7]

Burned was released on April 27, 2010,[8] and like Tempted, it entered the USA Today bestseller list that week at #1.[9] Awakened, released in January, 2011, also entered the list at #1.[10] [dead link] The series, which is published by St Martin's Press is planned to include twelve books.[11] In 2008, plans for a film adaptation were also announced.

The Ninth book in the series, Destined, is due out October 25, 2011.

The Vampyre World

The fictional world of House of Night differs from our own in one important respect: In a small percentage of teenagers, adolescent hormones trigger a strand of what is otherwise junk DNA, eventually changing them into vampyres.[12] The change from human to vampyre takes four years, during which time the adolescents, known as "fledglings," must attend one of the "House of Night" boarding schools.[13] While there, they are required to take the Vampyre Sociology 101 course to learn the dangers they face.[14] If a fledgling is not in constant proximity to adult vampyres, the fledgling will die; so the fledglings rarely leave the school. About one in ten fledglings die anyway, since their bodies cannot tolerate the Change. For those who survive, there's a big reward: in the words of one of the authors, "Vampyres are like Superman. They’re super-gorgeous. They’re super-talented. They’re super-men."[15]

The House of Night, Tulsa (In real life, Cascia Hall.)

Vampyres and fledglings are not destroyed by sunlight, as in many vampire novels, but it is painful to them, so classes at the House of Night are held at night.[16] Fledglings are marked by a sapphire blue crescent-shaped outline on their foreheads; when they become full-fledged Vampyres, this mark becomes solid and they receive more 'tattoos' which extend over their cheeks (these usually represent some personality aspect; for instance, Zoey's equestrian teacher, Lenobia, has tattoos that look like horses.) Zoey is the only fledgling to receive a filled-in mark and tattoos; as she defeats evil her tattoos extend over her shoulders, down to her lower back, around her waist, down her arms and palms, and across her chest. Older fledglings and adult vampyres need to drink small quantities of human blood, but House of Night vampyres do not attack humans to get it; the taking of blood is pleasurable for both human and Vampyre, and may lead to a strong bond, called "Imprinting" between the two. When an imprint is broken, it causes major pain between the vampyre and human.

Some of the issues that Zoey and her friends face are not covered in Vampyre Sociology 101. They are issues faced by real-life human teenagers. Zoey keeps some secrets from her friends and gets in trouble with them, forcing her to consider the nature of friendship. Kristin Cast said that these moral dilemmas were included because "those are issues teenagers deal with." She continued, "We're not afraid to discuss things that are actually happening."[17] As it happens, this kind of exploration of human nature and identity, its meaning, essence and boundaries, form a subtext to most contemporary vampire novels[18] "The point we wanted to make," said author P.C. Cast, "is acceptance and tolerance and also that teenagers can make mistakes and recover from them."[15] While these issues might not be discussed in the Vampyre Sociology class, they form a backdrop to the novel.

Religion in House of Night

The House of Night series is filled with religion. The House of Night religion is, in the words of P.C. Cast, "heavily pagan and Wiccan based, with a huge influx of Native American myth and legend".[17] Within vampyre society, the primary Goddess is a benevolent female named Nyx, who, at the beginning of the series, appears to Zoey and tells her that she will be Nyx's agent in the House of Night. Vampyres and fledglings cast a magic circle to communicate with Nyx or to harness the power of the elements: air, fire, water, earth, and spirit. Some demons from Cherokee mythology also play an important part in later volumes, and the Raven Mockers,[19] Kalona and Tsi Sgili[20] are taken from real Cherokee legends.[21]

Outside in the human world, the "People of Faith" is a fictional Protestant religion that is highly intolerant of anything else but their own beliefs. (In an interview, P.C. Cast said that she modeled the People of Faith on the worst fanatics of all religions, not just Protestantism.[22]) Catholicism also plays an important role in the later novels, with the fledglings joining forces with Catholic nuns against Kalona.

The religious ambiance gives House of Night a strong moral perspective which may apply to the real world as well. "Help me know the right thing to do," Zoey prays to Nyx, "and then give me the courage to do it."[23] Nyx gives vampyres and humans free will.[24] "We all have bad things inside us,"says Zoey, "and we all choose either to give in to those bad things or to fight them."[25] In other words, people who have bad, even monstrous desires are not monsters; people who give in to those urges are. This theme of free choice takes special prominence in Tempted, where Zoey discovers that, although she is the reincarnation of a woman created to love Kalona, she has the power to choose whether she will follow her previous incarnation's path or reject it.[26] One of the characters dies because Zoey makes the wrong choice.[27] Also, in Burned, a Manichaen view of the Universe is presented, in which Good battles Evil: forces of Light combat forces of Darkness and characters must choose which side to be on. Also, the black and white bull are presented.[28] In Awakened, the theme of love is presented, in which love must battle Darkness, and life is really only, always, about love.

Smart Pop is planning a book on the series for Summer 2011 release on mythology, folklore, and religion in the novels.[29]

The setting

The series is set in Tulsa, in a small and reclusive part of Midtown. The House of Night campus is in the real life campus of Cascia Hall, and the climactic scene of the first book in the series takes place in the extensive gardens of the Philbrook Museum. Zoey sometimes sneaks off-campus to the elegant shops of nearby Utica Square, and several important confrontations take place in Utica Square's Starbucks coffee shop. Some of the novels' most dramatic scenes take place in a catacomb-like network of tunnels under downtown Tulsa built by bootleggers during Prohibition; though a few such tunnels do indeed exist,[30] and can be visited,[31] they are far less extensive than the tunnels described by Cast. The abandoned Art Deco train depot where the tunnels begin, however, is real.[32] and is slated to become a concert hall[33] The location of Aphrodite's parents' mansion, South 27th Place, is a real street, though the mansion itself is fictional. Though Aphrodite's father, Mr. LaFont, the very rich and old mayor of Tulsa, has a name similar to the former, very rich, mayor of Tulsa Bill LaFortune, his character is very different, and the author has stressed that her fictional mayor

In a blizzard similar to that described in Hunted, 14 inches of snow fell on Tulsa.[34] This photo was taken about 100 yards from the route Zoey used to flee the House of Night.

is indeed fictional.[35] The Benedictine convent to which Zoey and her friends flee.[36] is real; it is called St. Joseph Monastery.[37] And the devastating ice storm through which they flee was based on a real ice storm that hit Tulsa in December 2007.[38] The climactic scene in Tempted takes place far from Tulsa, on San Clemente Island near Venice, which in real life called Isola di San Clemente and is part of the small island around Venice. The church at which the Vampyre High Council meets was built in 1131.[39]

Much of Burned takes place on the Inner Hebrides island of Skye, in the palace of Sgiach, the Vampyre queen. According to Scottish tradition, Sgiach (usually spelled Sgathach) was a princess many centuries ago who ran the best warrior training school in Scotland.[40] Princess Sgathach lived in Dunscaith Castle, which is today a ruin. (Seoras Wallace, the doughty Scottish historian who provided P.C. Cast with a background on Scottish mythology, became her boyfriend, and the Burned character of Sgiach's consort is modelled on him.[41])

Marked

In Marked, Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird lives in a world where vampyres have always existed. Zoey has been marked by a Tracker to become a fledgling vampyre at the House of Night, a school where she will be trained to become an adult vampyre. There are two options when you get marked, your body rejects the Change and you die or your body accepts the Change and you continue at the House of Night. All fledglings have a dark blue outline of a crescent moon that is positioned in the middle of their foreheads but Zoey is not an average fledgling because her mark is filled in and she has been chosen special by Nyx, the vampyre Goddess. Once she is enrolled into the school, she meets Neferet, the High Priestess of the House of Night who is now Zoey’s mentor. She also meets her roommate, Stevie Rae and they become best friends along with Damien, Erin, and Shaunee. She also meets the “nice” leader of the Dark Daughters and Sons, Aphrodite who has a power to see the future. Zoey gets invited to join the Dark Daughters and discovers she also has amazing powers given from the vampyre Goddess and she craves for blood which is unusual for such a new fledgling. Zoey then meets Erik Night, a vampyre at the House of Night and used to be Aphrodite’s boyfriend but is now Zoey’s new love interest. There is a special event that is called a Samhain where the Dark Daughters and Sons honor all the spirits with some blood. Everything was going fine until Heath, Zoey’s human ex-boyfriend interrupted and tried to bring Zoey back with him and when Aphrodite summoned the wrong spirits which were evil and tried to take Heath’s fresh human blood. It was up to Zoey to fix everything so she summoned all the evil spirits away with her special power. Neferet happened to witness everything and announced Zoey the new leader of the Dark Daughters and Sons.

Betrayed

Several crucial scenes in Betrayed and other volumes take place at these outdoor tables (in rear of photo) outside the Starbucks in Utica Square, Tulsa

At parent visitation, Zoey argues with her mother and stepfather, who vow never to come to the House of Night again. The same day, Zoey witnesses Aphrodite being scolded at by her parents and starts developing a token of sympathy for her enemy. Neferet informs Zoey Aphrodite's visions are no longer valid, but Zoey finds otherwise when she, corresponding to a vision Aphrodite had, is able to save her grandmother and several others from dying on a collapsing bridge. Following this, Zoey starts to lose her trust in Neferet. As two of her human boyfriend Heath's friends disappear and are found murdered, she begins to suspect Neferet has something to do with it, especially after witnessing Neferet discussing the murders with "undead", supposedly deceased students in a dream. Meanwhile, Zoey must make decisions regarding her love life, as she is drawn to her ex-boyfriend Heath due to heavy bloodlust, maintains a relationship with fledgling peer Erik Night and captures the interest of poet and school teacher Loren.

Zoey reorganizes the Dark Daughters, now she is in charge of them, but Neferet takes credit for most of her new ideas at the first new Dark Daughters ritual. Zoey utilizes the elemental affinities of her friend group to make the first ritual successful, but shortly after the ritual, her best friend Stevie Rae rejects her Change and dies. As Zoey grieves over Stevie Rae, she learns Heath has disappeared, following the two other murders. Knowing that Heath "imprinted" on her, a connection formed when vampyres consume a person's blood, she is able to locate him and takes off to retrieve him. She finds that Heath is being held captive by "undead" fledglings. Using her elemental affinities, Zoey frees Heath, but also finds out that it was Neferet who changed the dying fledglings in the "undead" creatures they currently are. Returning to the school, Neferet attempts to erase Zoey's memory, but Zoey recovers her memory and continues distrusting Neferet.

Chosen

Zoey needs to deal with her confusing romantic situation, maintaining relationships with three men at once, and eventually decides to break up with her human boyfriend Heath, whom she was mainly attracted to due to bloodlust. When she goes outside the House of Night to (unsuccessfully) break up with Heath, she re-encounters the "undead" Stevie Rae and gradually starts to see there are traces of humanity left in her. Zoey must learn to cooperate with her former enemy Aphrodite, since she is the only one who supports Zoey's distrust of Neferet and whose mind Neferet cannot read. Aphrodite and Zoey stall Stevie Rae in the servers' quarters of Aphrodite's house and attempt to figure out a way to "cure" her of her strange, "undead" condition. As a leader of the Dark Daughters, Zoey must choose someone to replace Stevie Rae as Earth and decides upon Aphrodite, much to the anger of her friends, after seeing Aphrodite's affinity for earth. Zoey becomes increasingly estranged from her boyfriend Erik as she has to keep lying to him, and further develops her affair with school teacher Loren Blake. After Erik unexpectedly completes his Change, Zoey loses her virginity to Loren, but Erik walks in on them having sex. Erik tells Zoey's friends of her betrayal, and as they learn that Stevie Rae was still alive as well, their trust in Zoey fades and it alienates them from her. Meanwhile, drama teacher Patricia Nolan is gruesomely murdered, her corpse impaled with a note citing the Bible, leading Zoey to suspect the church community of her stepfather, the People of Faith. In reaction to the incident, Neferet tightens security measures around the House and employs professional vampyre guardians.

Zoey discovers that Loren Blake's every interaction with her was controlled by Neferet, who was Loren's true lover. She asks for her goddess's advice in this difficult situation and decides to form a circle with her friends in an attempt to cure Stevie Rae. Stevie Rae angrily attacks Aphrodite after seeing the latter replacing her in Zoey's ceremony, but as Stevie Rae drinks Aphrodite's blood, Stevie Rae Changes into a different type of vampyre and Aphrodite changes back into a human. Afterward, news reaches them that Loren Blake was killed in a graphic manner similar to Patricia Nolan; upon receiving word of this, Neferet declares a war upon humans. Zoey realizes Neferet's actions are uncontrollable and dangerous and that she must face Neferet as her enemy.

Untamed

Zoey finally comes out of her room after two days of being trapped in there with only Nala to keep her company. Zoey reunites herself with her friends, under pressure from Aphrodite, who foresaw Zoey's death in a vision due to Zoey being isolated from her loved ones. The High Priestess of all vampyres, Shekinah, is prompted into coming to Tulsa after the murders of Nolan and Loren Blake, and takes a teaching position, as well as Zoey's ex-boyfriend Erik Night, who becomes Nolan's successor as Drama teacher. With Shekinah's permission, Zoey and Aphrodite set up a volunteering contract for the House of Night with Street Cats, a local shelter for cats ran by nuns, whose tolerance for vampyres and their views on religion surprises Zoey. The nuns believe that Nyx is another version of the Virgin Mary.

A new student, Stark, enrolls at the House of Night. Zoey becomes intrigued with him and his unusual ability to hit any target he aims at, but his body rejects the Change and he dies shortly after his introduction. While Zoey prepares to present Stevie Rae, who is now a red vampyre, to the school publicly during a ritual so as to expose Neferet's ways, Aphrodite has a vision of an ancient poem. With the help of Zoey's grandmother Sylvia Redbird, Zoey and Aphrodite learn the poem refers to Kalona, an ancient fallen angel who poses great danger to the world, and the Tsi Sgili, a order of Cherokee demons. The Tsi Sgili are witches by another name, and they are very powerful and intuitive. Kalona is a fallen angel. He fell from heaven and resided in a Cherokee village. Kalona was treated like a god at first, but he got greedy and began raping the women of the tribe and using the men. The seven Ghigua women of the tribe (very much like High Priestesses) decided that Kalona must be trapped, so they created a maiden out of a clay doll, A-ya. A-ya was designed to love Kalona. A-ya seduced him, then she led him into the bowels of the earth, trapping herself with him. Kalona was trapped, but he seems to be on his way to breaking free with the help of evil forces, whom Zoey immediately concludes are lead by Neferet. Kalona's humanoid sons, semi-physical, harmful raven beings, the Raven Mockers, orchestrate attacks on Zoey and her grandmother to halt their mission to stop Kalona; one of the attacks lands Sylvia in the hospital in a coma. Nevertheless, Zoey begins her big ritual and presents Stevie Rae to the school and does so with the red fledglings as well. Neferet finally reveals her true intentions upon being provoked this way and emerges with an undead Stark at her side. She has him shoot Stevie Rae, so that her "undead" blood spills on the earth, and so the ancient poem about Kalona's return is complete. Neferet kills Shekinah and watches as Kalona breaks free of his imprisonment. Neferet announces Kalona as Erebus come to Earth and that he is her Consort. Zoey finds out that Neferet is Queen Tsi Sgili. Kalona's Raven Mockers gain full physical form and start attack humans on a large scale while Zoey, her friends (including Aphrodite), Stevie Rae and the red fledglings plus warrior Darius flee the scene and hide in the tunnels beneath Tulsa, where they know Kalona cannot enter. Zoey tells all of them that they are new and Nyx has Chosen each and every one of them to fight Darkness. Zoey vows they will fight Kalona.

Hunted

Zoey and her friends help Stevie Rae heal - the arrow did not kill her, but took most of her lifeblood, so Kalona could be freed from the earth. Zoey and Stevie Rae reconcile their BFF friendship. Aphrodite lets Stevie Rae feed on her to heal, which forms an Imprint between the red vampyre and the human. One of the red vampire fledglings, Kramisha, gets exited and looses her control a little when she sees Heath, Zoey's human boyfriend - like she wants to eat him. Zoey starts questioning that the red fledlings really are good and safe. Stevie Rae denies that the red fledglings are evil, but Zoey sees that Stevie Rae is hiding something.

Zoey and her friends try to figure out the things that just happened at the House of Night. Kalona starts getting into Zoey's dreams to seduce her, which begins the story. Kalona calls Zoey A-ya. When Erik follows Zoey on her way to her room they kiss, but then Erik gets too rough with her and scares Zoey. Erik and Zoey get back together, though Zoey's not sure since Erik acts so jeaously was so rough with her before. After Zoey finds out that Kramisha has prophetic powers and can write prophecies in poems, she names her the new Poet Laureate of their group. Kramisha writes a prophecy that says that Night, Humanity, Blood, Spirit and Earth will be manifested and will come together to try to banish Kalona and Neferet from the House of Night, but Zoey doesn't know who shall represent these elements. Heath arrives at the tunnels, heeding Zoey's call. Heath and Zoey are glad to see each other, and Heath asks Zoey to come outside to talk. Erik gets very jealous and posessive, wich makes Zoey mad and she goes outside for a talk with Heath. Heath tells her that she needs to be with him, but Zoey disagrees saying that she's happy with Erik. Zoey is attacked by a Raven Mocker and gets very close to death. The elements try to heal her, but all they do is bring on the full calligraphy of the pain. Heath's blood finally heals her again, causing the two to Imprint once more, but this Imprint is even stronger than the first. Zoey's wounds do not completely heal; she is forced to go back to the House of Night with all of her friends, besides Stevie Rae, Erik, Heath and all the red fledglings. Kalona's presence has not only caused danger for the fledglings but also caused the fledglings and the vampyres to turn their backs on Nyx, which Zoey discovers while in class. Kalona's favorite son, Rephaim, and Darius fight, giving Darius a huge scar which upsets Aphrodite. Zoey successfully persuades Stark to turn back to the good side. He becomes the second red vampyre when he pledges his Warrior's Oath to Zoey. Zoey accepts his Oath which is what turned him into a red vampyre. Zoey discusses with Lenobia, the Horse Mistress, the situation, and finds out that Blood is Stevie Rae, Humanity is Aphrodite, Zoey's Night, Sister Mary Angela is Spirit, and Grandma Redbird is Earth. Later, Zoey and her friends escape from the House of Night and run way to the abbey of the Benedictine nuns. With the help of Sister Mary Angela, Stevie Rae, Aphrodite, and Grandma Redbird, plus all the red fledglings, the Benedictine nuns and her friends, Zoey banishes Neferet and Kalona from Tulsa. Her Mark spreads to across her scar. She is deeply in heartbreaking pain down to her soul because she had to say goodbye to Kalona.

Tempted

Tempted starts immediately after the end of events in the 5th book, Hunted, and is told from the point of view of six characters; Zoey, Stevie Rae, Aphrodite, Rephaim, Heath, and partially Stark. Zoey is initially confused over her three outstanding relationships with Heath, Erik and Stark. She dumps Erik when he becomes overly jealous and possessive, taking her down to two love interests (whilst Erik forms a relationship with Venus, Aphrodite's ex- roommate). As Zoey is suffering from nightmares, caused by the immortal Kalona entering her mind whilst she is asleep, the High Priestess sleeps with Stark, whose presence protects her from Kalona and his mind games. Darius, a Son of Erebus, plegdes to be Aphrodite's Warrior (as he has fallen in love with her), though Aphrodite believes in her heart that she does not deserve his loyalty or devotion, but she accepts the Oath. Meanwhile, Stevie Rae finds an injured Raven Mocker named Rephaim (the favored son of Kalona) and helps him to safety. Stevie Rae and Rephaim form a friendly relationship. Zoey finds out that she herself is A-ya's reincarnation and that A-ya was made to love Kalona, so she cannot help being uncontrollably attracted to Kalona, as it's in her soul. Stark allows Zoey to drink Heath's blood. The two's blood drinking session is not sexual; it is very normal, and Zoey believes it is the moment when Heath truly "became her Consort". The kids return to the House of Night. They find Anastasia Lankford, a professor at the House of Night, dead at Rephaim's hands, and Dragon grieving her loss, along with their cats. Jack stays with Dragon to comfort him and coax him through his pain. Through Aphrodite's visions, Zoey's dreams of Kalona and Kramisha's prophetic poems they find that Kalona and Neferet plan on getting back the old ways of the vampyres. This is sure to cause horrific destruction and the deaths of many vampyres, fledgelings and humans. They also learn that Zoey brings upon this; if she is with Kalona at the end the world will end as they know it, and if she chooses love and Nyx he will "die" and the world will be safe. The heroes also happen to learn that in order to achieve their evil goal, Kalona and Neferet want the support of the Vampyre High Council. The council is based in Venice, and the evil pair travel there to carry out their plan. Neferet claims to be Nyx Incarnate and Kalona claims to be Erebus. It is revealed that Zoey's destiny is to face Kalona alone, meaning that only she can save the world. With Lenobia's help, they fly to Venice, Italy to convince the High Council of their enemies' motives. While the others are in Venice, Stevie Rae gets into mortal danger, at the merciless hands of the rogue, dark red fledglings. She is saved by Rephaim at the last minute and the two Imprint through Stevie Rae drinking his blood, and therefore regaining strength. Rephaim does this out of a need to repay her for nursing him back to health. The new Imprint between the red vampyre and the Raven Mocker results in Stevie's Imprint with Aphrodite shattering. This puts Aphrodite in great danger and pain. Finally, after the High Council meeting, Heath takes a walk. He overhears a conversation between Kalona and Neferet. Kalona kills Heath by snapping his neck, at Neferet's command. Because Zoey and Heath have shared such a deep and loving bond for several years (since childhood), Zoey's soul shatters and she passes into a coma-like state. The book ends with Zoey and Heath meeting each other in the Otherworld, and Zoey blacking out at the grief that Heath is dead..

Burned

Much of Burned takes place on the Inner Hebrides island named Isle of Skye in an ancient castle like this one in northwest Skye, Dunvegan Castle.

Zoey's soul has shattered and has gone to the Otherworld due to Kalona killing Zoey's human Consort, Heath. For Zoey to get her shattered soul complete again, Stark must find a way to travel to the Otherworld without dying and save his High Priestess. The narrative mode is told from multiple points of view in third-person limited (including Stark's, Kalona's, Aphrodite's, Heath's, Rephaim's, and Stevie Rae's) and first-person narrative in Zoey's point of view, as in previous books.

Zoey is stuck in the Otherworld. If her body remains unoccupied by her spirit, it will die in a week. Her friends desperately try to find a way to save her. Aphrodite, at first only for appearances at the Vampire High Council, acts as Nyx's Prophetess and finds that she can force a vision by touching Zoey's body. She discovers that Zoey's spirit is gone from her body, and she spearheads the plan to figure out how to rescue Zoey, the sister she never had. After some research into ancient-forgotten vampyre legends and religion, the Nerd Herd finds out about the eternal struggle between Light and Darkness personified by a Black Bull and a White Bull respectively. Stevie Rae and Rephaim together figure out that Neferet has imprisoned Kalona's body in this realm using Darkness and sent his spirit to the Otherworld to ensure that Zoey does not put the shattered pieces of her soul together and stays trapped in the Otherworld. Zoey's friends discover, from ancient scrolls, that to travel to the Otherworld without dying they need to know more about forgotten ancient beliefs regarding the two bulls. Stevie Rae accidentally summons the white bull, which is Darkness personified, to find a way for Stark, Zoey's Oath-sworn Warrior who is frantic to save her, to enter the Otherworld. The bull tells Stevie Rae a poem about how it's possible. As payment for giving that knowledge, the white bull extracts his payment in her pain and her blood. Rephaim saves her at the last minute by offering himself. Stevie Rae summons the black bull and saves them both at the price of always staying connected to Rephaim's humanity. Since she survives, Stevie Rae is able to pass on the poem with the way to the Otherworld to Aphrodite. Stark is overjoyed to find a way to help Zoey, and according to the poem goes to the Isle of Women also known as the Isle of Skye to find Sgaich, an ancient Warrior queen who can help him enter the Otherworld. Stark, Darius and Aphrodite travel to the Isle and observe the ancient warrior ways. With their guidance, Stark undertakes a perilous journey to the Otherworld where he slays his Warrior self to become a Shaman and thus reach Zoey. Stark convinces Heath that he has to leave Zoey and move on so that she, in turn, can move on and save the world from Kalona and Neferet. Meanwhile, Stevie Rae is having huge problems of her own. She is trying to hide the existence of Rephaim from the red fledglings, and at the same time she seems to be developing feelings for him. Stevie Rae struggles with being Bonded to Rephaim and tries to gets Dallas to have sex with her because she wants to feel good and have all her stress taken away. However, Rephaim feels what is happening and tries to stop her from abandoning him (which she is not trying to do). Finding out that Stevie Rae has been keeping Rephaim a secret infuriates Dallas, and he lets Darkness come into him and becomes the third red vampyre, though he with Darkness and not Light, like Stark and Stevie Rae. He nearly kills both Stevie Rae and Rephaim using his affinity for electricity, but they escape. In the Otherworld, Heath moves on and tells a devastated Zoey that they will meet again in his next life. Stark approaches her in the Otherworld and cannot explain to Zoey how she must bring her soul back together. But Stark's journey has taught him of being a Guardian, which is more than simply a Warrior. He accepts that his role is to protect Zoey from anything, even if it means he dies or she does not love him. Stark engages Kalona in a dangerous fight. When Zoey sees this she realizes that she needs to pull herself together, and she pulls the pieces of her shattered soul back together. Before she can intervene, Kalona manages to kill Stark. Zoey attacks Kalona and manages to overpower him. She demands that he pay up the life debt he owes her for killing her Consort by bringing Stark back to life. When Kalona refuses, Nyx intervenes, causing Kalona to share a part of his immortality with Stark, and bring him back to life. Nyx banishes Kalona's body AND spirit from the Otherworld. Zoey fully accepts Stark as her Guardian and lets him drink from her so he could heal, the elements fill her again and all her tattoos come back. Rephaim and Stevie Rae are together and finally seem to be starting a relationship when they feel Kalona and Zoey come back into this realm. Rephaim says that his heart has never mattered enough, and Stevie Rae says that he should come back to her when his heart is as important to him as it is to her. At the end of the story, Zoey comes back from the otherworld before Stark and then brings his soul back to his body in the real world, and Zoey tells Stark that it's all over. She hears Nyx laugh and say "No daughter. This is only the beginning..."

Awakened

Zoey and Stark reassure their connection by having sex, which, in turn, heals Zoey completely, allowing her soul to fully resonate in her body. Zoey finds out that she wields the ancient magick of the fey and can bring back old fey that serve her elements, prompting Queen Sgiach to ask her to stay on Skye indefinitely and be her successor. Aphrodite and Darius leave Skye, but Zoey and Stark decide to stay a little longer while Stark recuperates. Zoey continuously senses Darkness on Skye, leading her to believe that she cannot hide from Darkness anymore. Neferet returns to the House of Night. In an attempt to draw Zoey back from Skye after Kalona's failed mission, Neferet kills Jack as a debt payment to Darkness. Kalona finds out that he can enter Stark's mind because of the immortality he breathed into him.

In Awakened, Neferet rents a penthouse at Tulsa's historic Mayo Hotel. Photo shows the Mayo lobby.

Jack's death sends Damien into a deep depression. Zoey returns to the House of Night, being welcomed by her grandma. Neferet allows Zoey to light Jack's funeral pyre. Stevie Rae and Rephaim get back together. During Jack's funeral ceremony, Neferet asks Zoey for forgiveness to regain everyone's trust. Zoey accepts the fake apology even though she sees through Neferet, but many other people think the apology is genuine. Rephaim later makes his appearance after being forced to fall out of the sky. Neferet then accuses him of being allied with Darkness and Stevie Rae for being allied with Rephaim, so Neferet orders the Sons of Erebus to kill both of them. Kalona interferes and faces the Sons of Erebus with Rephaim. The two fight, but Rephaim only defends himself rather than attacking the warriors. Stevie Rae asks her friends to cast a circle to stop the battle and save Rephaim. Just when Dragon Lankford tries to kill Rephaim with the help of Neferet, Nyx appears in an apparition and forgives Rephaim. He was given the choice to choose between Stevie Rae and Kalona and ends up choosing Stevie Rae. Nyx alters him permanently for this decision, so from then on, Rephaim would be a raven during the day and a human during the night. Because Neferet and Dragon do not accept him at the House of Night, Zoey, her friends, and the red fledglings leave to start a new House of Night on their own in the tunnels, with Zoey being the "vampyre queen", Stevie Rae being the High Priestess, Aphrodite being the Prophetess, Kramisha being the Poet Laureate, and all the red fledglings and Zoey's friends being the students.. Towards the end of the book, Neferet cooperates with the white bull and intends on sacrificing Sylvia Redbird, but ends up killing Linda Heffer (who had recently left Zoey's stepfather due to his infidelity) to create a Vessel for her (someone who has to obey her completely) as a weapon to use against Zoey. Meanwhile, in the Otherworld, Heath is given the opportunity by Nyx, to be the lost soul in this Vessel and he chooses it over being reborn in the real world or remaining in the Otherworld; this way, he can help Zoey in the modern world. Meanwhile, Stark and Zoey are making out and preparing to have sex for their third time, but Stark becomes aggressive, which is unlike himself. He bites Zoey, but she is finally able to stop him (It is implied that it was Kalona, not Stark, in Stark's soul, who took over and got aggressive). When they go to sleep, Zoey has a dream where she learns of her mother's death and realizes that her mother really cared for her. The book ends with Zoey waking up with this new realization and beginning to cry and grieve for her mother's death, and Stark being there to comfort her.

Major characters

Blue Fledglings

Zoey Redbird

Zoey is a 17-year-old who comes from Broken Arrow who, when she becomes a fledgling, moves to the House of Night. Given special powers by the goddess Nyx, whom she encounters in a vision,[42] her crescent moon is filled in and she has an affinity for all five elements (Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Spirit). The first five novels, and portions of the later ones, are written in the first person point of view with her as narrator, so her interior monologues assume center stage. Zoey is a lot like author Kristin Cast was at her age; this was done deliberately, to make it easier for Kristin to tell how Zoey would react in any given situation,[15] and may have added depth and realism to Zoey's character, the most fully developed of the series. Like Kristin,[22] Zoey has a love for brown pop. Zoey has dark eyes, olive tone skin, and dark brown hair.[43] She is the reincarnation of A-ya, a woman created by ancient Cherokee women, created only to love Kalona and to trap him under the earth, and has some of A-ya's memories. Zoey has a messy love life, always balancing more than one guy at a time. Zoey's soul is shattered when she witnessed Kalona snap Heath's neck. She needs to piece her soul together and return to her body in 7 days or all hell will break loose. The White Bull will kill the Black Bull and Neferet will rule even over Kalona. Darkness will rule as Neferet makes slaves of all humans and vampyres. Someone, however, stands between Zoey's soul and body. Heath. Zoey cannot imagine life without him so she is willing to stay in the Otherworld with him forever and let her body die. Stark saves her and she returns to earth. She and Stark make love soon after she is revived in Awakened. At the end of Awakened, she decides to become a new "Queen", in order to form a House of Night out of Neferet´s path.

Damien Maslin

Damien is very intelligent, warm-hearted and proudly gay. Damien likes to use very long words that usually confuse the group. He has been dating Jack Twist who has an affinity for "Modern Technology." Damien has an affinity for Air. He's described as well built for fencing. Damien has brown colored hair and deer-like brown eyes. Damien is also described as having an excellent bone-structure and the studious one.

The Twins

Shaunee Cole and Erin Bates, though not related and in fact of different races, are so psychologically connected that everyone calls them the Twins. Their valley girl banter, though predictable, provides some comedic diversion. They are both rich and always wear designer clothes. Shaunee has an affinity for Fire and Erin has an affinity for Water. Erin Bates and Shaunee Cole are described to be freakishly alike despite the fact that Erin is Caucasian with blue eyes, cream colored skin and long, straight, blond hair from Tulsa, while Shaunee is of mixed Jamaican/American descent with long dark glossy waves of hair, cappuccino colored skin, and dark eyes from Connecticut. They think of themselves as "Twins." They finish each others sentences and almost have the same taste in boys but not the same boy (that would be a disaster).

Jack Twist

Damien's technological and very emotional boyfriend. He's always around when the group is in need of an AV guy, or with a package of travel tissues from his 'man purse'or satchel. Jack is gifted with a vast knowledge about technology. He turns out to have an affinity for the Modern World. He also shares ownership of James Stark's giant Labrador dog, Duchess. He's described as a young, handsome and beautiful guy. He's passionate and proud about being gay. Jack was a very strong boy when he was killed in Awakened by Darkness, because Neferet needed a soul she could not taint as a payment for trapping Kalona's soul.

Cats

Nala Nala is Zoey Redbird's cat. She is a small orange tabby with a white spot over her nose. Zoey found her in Marked after leaving her first Dark Daughters ritual and her horrible confrontation with Heath and Kayla. Zoey named her Nala because she believed the cat looked like a small lioness.

Cameron Cameron is Damien Maslin's cat who appears in Marked, Tempted, Betrayed, and Awakened. Cameron is a cream colored tabby who is always being bullied by the twin's cat, Beelzebub.

Beelzebub Beelzebub is the twins' giant gray-haired tom-cat. This cat is described as hateful and is always bullying other smaller cats around the House of Night. Beelzebub appears in "Chosen" and "Untamed".

Maleficent Maleficent is Aphrodite's hateful cat. She is a Persian cat with white fur and beady eyes. Aphrodite received her from the nuns in Street Cats cat adoption in Untamed.

Neferititi Nefertiti is Darius' cat, who chose him when he was a fledgling

Mab Queen Sgiach´s cat. She is described as being a giant, long-haired black and white tuxedo cat. She is also described by Zoey as being a thousand yars old and mostly stayed only semi-conscious and barely moving on the end of the queen´s bed. She is only briefly mentioned in Awakened.

Dogs

Duchess Duchess, nicknamed Duch, is Stark's dog, she is loyal and heartwarming and Stark shares her with Jack. She is a Labrador Retriever and is much loved by Stark, Jack, Damien, Zoey and many other characters. Later in the series she becomes Jack´s dog. When Jack dies, she is seen with Damien and Damien´s cat, Cameron.

Blue Vampyres

Neferet

The High Priestess of the House of Night, and Zoey Redbird's mentor. Her position at Tulsa’s House of Night is roughly equal to that of a head principal, although her position carries considerably more power. As well as serving as the High Priestess at the House of Night, she also teaches Vampyre Sociology to students and is also Loren Blake's lover. At first, Neferet is seen as a sweet, protective, motherly figure to Zoey, but later on in the novels, a deep secret is discovered as it turns out she is not quite the lovely high priestess everyone thought she was. Neferet has been embracing evil and straying from the path of Nyx. She revived Kalona, an immortal fallen angel, and used him to reach immortal status herself. She wants to revert the world back to the old ways, where vampyres ruled, and become the queen of the earth. Neferet is later discovered to be the one that murdered Professor Loren Blake and Professor Patricia Nolan. She also evoked the white bull(the essence of evil) and kills Zoey's mother

Erik Night

Breathtakingly handsome and a talented actor, Erik, once Aphrodite's boyfriend, falls in love with Zoey, who loves him but is also bound by blood to Heath. Zoey describes him as "Superman tall" with curly black hair and big, blue eyes. He is excessively possessive and tends to get jealous quickly. He recently completed the Change and is a substitute Drama teacher at the House of Night. He breaks up with Zoey in Chosen when he finds her making love with Loren Blake, but he still loves her and that allows him to resist Kalona's charms. He soon gets back together with Zoey when they escape the House of Night. However, in "Tempted" they soon break up again; Zoey dumps him after she feels his possessiveness is out of control because she has bonds with James Stark and Heath Luck. He moves on to Venus, referred to by Aphrodite as the "ReBound." In Awakened, after mourning the loss of Jack, who was Eriks roommate, Erik begins to show his good side to everyone. He is accepted by House of Night L.A. and wants to become the next "Brad Pitt". But Nyx makes him the tracker of House Of Night, Tulsa, and he gets a beautiful dark tattoo on his hand for becoming the tracker. When Zoey consoles him, he and Zoey become friends forever and they know they are not meant for each other.

The southeast side of House of Night, Tulsa

Loren Blake

The Vampyre Poet Laureate and a visiting teacher. Loren Blake has dark hair and eyes and looks like every woman's vision of the perfect man. Loren soon shows an interest in Zoey that exceeds the normal teacher-student bond. He and Zoey imprint on each other while making love, breaking the imprint between Zoey and Heath. He is soon revealed to be in league with Neferet, as well as in love with her. He is killed by Neferet in Chosen, after he goes out to look for Zoey when he feels her sadness through the bond created by their imprint. In Tempted Neferet reveals that she killed Loren as he wanted both Zoey and Neferet.

Darius

A Vampyre Warrior and member of the elite Sons of Erebus Vampyre guard, Darius enters the story in Chosen and becomes Zoey's ally. He is also Aphrodite's first real love, eventually giving her his Warrior's Oath in Tempted. He is also the only living Son of Erebus not to believe Kalona is Erebus. All others were led by the leader of the Sons of Erebus Ate and are killed off in Untamed.

Lenobia

Lenobia is the House of Night Horse Mistress and the Professor of the Equestrian class. She is described as a petite woman with long blond hair and oddly gray eyes that Zoey describes as the color of slate. Her Mark is unusually beautiful for it looks like plunging horses.[44] She has complete and utter faith in Zoey, and serves as a guide to her. She assists in Zoey's escape with her friends to the Benidictine Abbey. Lenobia is a strict, but highly respected Vampyre. She is wise and noble with vast connections, including the High Council of Nyx.

Dragon Lankford He is the fencing teacher at the House of Night in Tulsa. He loses his wife, Anastasia Lankford to the Raven Mocker, Rephaim. Being still grief stuck, he doesn´t forgive Rephaim at the end of Awakened, and is seen receiving orders from Neferet.

Anastasia Lankford She was Dragon's wife. She was the Spells and Ritual teacher at the House of Night in Tulsa. She was killed by Raven mocker Rephaim in "Tempted".

Queen Sgiach Queen on the Isle of Skye (Isle of Women) Sgiach is a deadly warrior queen who is described having long white hair with a single streak of red running through it. She is a muscular yet feminine woman who has an affinity for the island appearing and disappearing at will, almost out of thin air. She withdrew from Vampyre society when the Sons of Erebus were taken from her to the Isle of Skye where she casted a powerful protective spell not allowing anyone one in her Isle without permission. If any tried to the barrier would instantly kill the intruder. Her marks include intricate designed swords framing her face.

Seoras MacUallis He is the Warrior and Defender of Sgiach. He is Also James Stark´s Ancestor and the head of the Clan MacUallis, Guardians of the Ace.He is described to have lots of scars on his face.

Red Fleglings

Kramisha She was a six-former when she died. She now is the Poet Laureate and Prophetess of the Red Vampyres. Her poems have helped the group discover answers trying to fight evil.

Nicole Leader of the Evil Red Fledglings. She hates that Stevie Rae got the title of High Pristess by being the first Red Vampyre. She is working with Dallas to work on an unknown plan.

Venus She used to be Aphrodite´s roommate back in the House of Night before she died. Her character is similar to Aphrodite´s. She used to feel something for Erik Night.

Johnny B Muscular boy of the Red Fleglings.

Ant A small boy in the Red group.

Elliot His body rejected the change because he was very lazy (and annoying). But still he is on Zoey's side.

Red Vampyres

Stevie Rae Johnson

Sign at the border of Stevie Rae's hometown

A nice girl from Henryetta, Oklahoma, Stevie Rae is Zoey's roommate and immediate best friend. She has an affinity for Earth and is often depicted as straight forward and honest, but as the series continues the other sides of her begin to show. Her affinity also grows stronger through the books' progression. She was a fledgling who rejected the Change and was turned into one of Neferet's evil red fledglings. Once Zoey helps her find her humanity, she is Changed into the first Red Vampyre known. While drinking Aphrodite's blood, they accidentally imprint with each other in Hunted. InTempted she breaks their imprint by forming one with Rephaim, a Raven Mocker. Stevie Rae is the only one of the few fledglings with short hair, which is super curly, and the little country bumpkin is usually wearing cowboy boots and roper jeans. She is also the High Priestess of the Red Vampyres. In Burned, she and Rephaim finally begin to develop feelings for each other, but an obstacle is posed by Kalona's return at the end of the book. In the same book, she also managed to summon the manifestation of Darkness by mistake, thus putting her in danger. To banish the beast, she summoned the manifestation of Light, paying the cost it takes from her; tying her to the humanity in Rephaim.

James Stark

James Stark is the best archer in the world, but he is not proud of it. Stark appears briefly after being transferred from the House of Night in Chicago, then dies in Zoey's arms as she begins to develop feelings for him during his first night in Tulsa. He is described as being of average height with well built arms, sandy brown hair, warm brown eyes, and a cocky smile. It is also said in the series that he has a 'hot body' that all the girls at the House Of Night, Tulsa, found very attractive. Stark is an archer and his gift from Nyx is that he never misses his target. Unfortunately the target his subconscious selects is not necessarily the one he wants to hit. After a terrible accident killing his mentor, Stark gave up archery. That is, until Zoey convinced him otherwise. Stark and Zoey have an instant connection with each other, in which they became close enough that Zoey had to, after he becomes a red fledgling, help him choose the right path, the good path. When Zoey accepts Stark's Warrior Oath to her, he officially chooses the path of good and becomes the second Red Vampyre and the first male one. He almost kills himself with his own arrow when Neferet commands him to shoot Zoey's heart, which he considers his. Luckily, Zoey sent the five elements to protect him and stop the arrow. Stark was left with a terrible wound but remained alive. In the seventh book, Burned, Stark becomes Zoey's Guardian, in order to save her shattered soul in the Otherworld. P.C. Cast has said that Stark's evolution into a Guardian was a surprise even to her; she originally introduced Stark simply as a love interest for Zoey. In Awakened it is said because Kalona Saved his life he can enter his mind which he uses against Zoey.[22]

Dallas

One of Stevie Rae's red fledglings, also her boyfriend in a way. When Rephaim interrupts them having sex, just before Stevie Rae bites his neck to feed from him, he feels such rage at Stevie Rae defending Rephaim that he allows Darkness to embrace him and he attacks them with electricity (his affinity). At this, he experiences the Change and becomes the third Red Vampyre in existence, but the First Evil Vampyre from rage, and calls Stevie Rae a ho, then steals Zoey's little bug(car) and claims he's going to reveal her secret to everyone at the House of Night. He is mentioned briefly in Awakened with Rephaim spying on him and the other evil Red fledglings. He is leading them somewhere.

Prophetess

Aphrodite LaFonte

Daughter of Tulsa's extremely rich mayor, Aphrodite enters the series as a conceited, selfish rich girl who tells Zoey, "Things go my way. You want to get along here, you had best remember that."[45] But Aphrodite, afflicted with painful prophetic visions and mentally abused by her domineering parents, soon is seen as a richer, more complex character, and in the end becomes Zoey's friend. She is described as gorgeous and having very big, blond hair. She is also described as statuesque and is referred to as looking like an angel.

Aphrodite is also introduced as the leader of a group known as the Dark Daughters in Marked until control is taken from her and given to Zoey, once Zoey shows the power that was bestowed upon her by the goddess Nyx. Aphrodite gets Changed back into a human in the end of Chosen in order to give back Stevie Rae's humanity. Though she lost the status of being a Vampyre fledgling, she is still considered more than a normal human, because her goddess-given gifts still remain with her. She softens up as the series progresses and becomes a part of Zoey's tight circle, admitting to herself that she's found a sister in Zoey. Aphrodite coins Zoey and her friends, "the Nerd Herd." Aphrodite falls in love with Warrior Darius, who is her sworn Warrior and who loves her for who she is, even though she does not feel she deserves to be loved. The Oath proves that Aphrodite is not just an average human, for Warrior Oaths do not take effect on humans. After Stevie Rae's death, Aphrodite held her Earth affinity, which was taken back by Nyx herself and returned to Stevie Rae after her rebirth as a Red Vampyre. In Hunted, an accidental imprint is formed between the two, as a result of Aphrodite saving Stevie Rae's life. In Tempted, Stevie Rae imprints with the Raven Mocker, Rephaim, causing their imprint to break. In Burned, Aphrodite widens the scope of her powers, able to see into someone's soul, allowing her to become a true prophetess of Nyx.

Humans

Heath Luck

Quarterback of his high school football team and in love with Zoey since third grade. Heath was her boyfriend before she became a fledgling. Later, when Zoey accidentally tastes his blood, they become imprinted on each other. They stay imprinted on and off during all of the books and always have a good, romantic connection. He is willing to do anything for Zoey even if it means that he has to share her with others. He is killed by Kalona in Tempted because he overhears him talking to Neferet. Zoey sees Kalona break Heath's neck, summons Spirit to attack Kalona, and then collapses. After seeing her Consort murdered in front of her Zoey's soul shatters. In Burned, Heath performs a final act of sacrifice by leaving Zoey and going into the afterlife. Which in turn, helps Zoey recover from her shattered soul and return from the Otherworld. In Awakened, Heath comes back into the story at the end when Nyx gives him three futures he can choose from; the one he chooses is putting his soul into the Vessel creature that Neferet has created as a servant, naming him Aurox, in order to thwart Neferet's plans and help save Zoey and the fight against Neferet.

Sylvia Redbird

A native AmericanCherokee and a Wise Woman (also referred as 'Ghigua' in the book), Zoey's grandma provides comfort and advice to Zoey. She is by default the mother figure in Zoey's life, and some of the names she calls her are Zoeybird, and U-we-tsi-a-ge-ya (the Cherokee word for daughter). In touch with ancient Cherokee spirits, she helps Zoey deal with her new world of Vampyres, spirits and demons. She also accepts Zoey for who she is and not what everyone wants her to be. She even helps Zoey save her own life in Untamed. In Hunted she personifies Earth and helps to banish Kalona.

Sister Mary Angela

Sister Mary Angela is Prioress of the Abbey at a local church in Tulsa who is tolerant of the vampyres at the House of Night. She runs the Street Cats organization. Sister Mary Angela is currently taking care of Grandma Redbird.

John and Linda Heffer

Zoey's stepfather, John Heffer, is a narrow-minded control freak who dominates his wife Linda, a once loving mother to Zoey. Linda now rejects Zoey's nonconformity and Zoey has a strained relationship with her. John is an elder of the People of the Faith, a religious group that discriminates against Vampyres, and believes that any religion except their own is wrong. Linda is a weak-willed woman who prefers to have someone else make her decisions and this also ruins her relationship with her mother, Sylvia Redbird. As a small joke, Zoey calls John her step-loser. Neither have been mentioned since Untamed. Linda finally figures out that John is a loser in 'Awakened' when she walks in on him with his secertary bent over his desk. Linda goes to her mothers house to apologize for everything she put Sylvia and Zoey through when Neferet arrives and kills her as an offering to the evil white bull.

Raven Mockers

Rephaim

Rephaim is the first and favorite son of Kalona. In Tempted, he kills Professor Anastasia, then gets shot by Darius while chasing after Zoey and her friends. Stevie Rae finds him injured, but instead of killing him she is compelled to rescue him. She nurses him back to health, which Rephaim considers a life-debt. Evil red fledgling Nicole reads his mind when she finds him healing in the tunnels, and she uses him to trap and try to kill Stevie Rae. Rephaim fulfills his life debt by saving Stevie Rae from this trap and letting her feed from him. Doing so created a strong imprint between the two, which broke the previous imprint Stevie Rae already had with Aphrodite.

In Burned, Rephaim experiences new emotions, particularly toward Stevie Rae. When she accidentally conjures Darkness, he senses her fear and summons dark power to fix himself and find Stevie Rae. He faces Darkness and claims her as his own and sacrifices himself as the blood payment required, which gives Stevie Rae just enough of time to summon Light. As payment by Light, she becomes tied to the humanity inside Rephaim to save his life again. Rephaim stops Stevie Rae from breaking their imprint and he becomes her Consort.

In Awakened, Rephaim gets to choose between his father Kalona, or Stevie Rae which also includes light and following the path of the goddess, he chooses Stevie Rae which makes him earn the forgiveness from the Goddess and is given the gift of transforming into a human at night but the punishment for all the horrible things he did in his past and turn into a Raven during the day. He then united with Stevie Rae and the rest of the Nerd Herd to start the new "House of Night" with Zoey as the "Queen".

Immortals

Nyx

Nyx is the Goddess worshipped by all Vampyres. She is the goddess of night and truly Night personified. She is also worshipped by other cultures, through various physical forms and names, possibly even as the Virgin Mary. Nyx first appears to be Native American in Marked, but later on in the series she wears the body of "spirit personified." Zoey and her friends try to follow her wishes no matter how bad things get, while Neferet goes against Nyx; as Nyx has granted all of her subjects the free will to make their own choices. Nyx tells Zoey that she never takes back a gift that she has given. This is why she says she cannot stop Neferet in Untamed. But in Burned, she intervenes as Zoey confronts Kalona, forcing him to pay the debts Zoey demands he return her guardian James Stark. In Awakened; she intervenes again in front of fledgings and vampyres. Nyx,is still worshipped today, but mostly known as a Greek goddess. Everyone who believes in her is a daughter or son of hers, so a daughter or son of the night. Believers tend to have night as their favorite time. During full moons or other lunar events followers do rituals and other religious things. She gifts her sons and daughters with mental abilities, for example: visions, out of body experiences, and more. She speaks to one through dreams or OOB experiences. She keeps in touch with all her followers and treats them with what they deserve. She will not interfere with the destiny of things, but she will always give support and blessings.

Erebus

Erebus is Nyx's consort- an Immortal with golden wings. Kalona pretends to be Erebus on Earth, despite his black wings, so he can gain the Vampyres' trust. Erebus has had a very limited presence in the books so far, mostly only being mentioned in name.

Kalona

Kalona is an evil fallen angel whom Neferet introduces to everyone as Erebus, Nyx's Consort. Kalona goes into Zoey's dreams and tries to seduce her. He is thousands of years old, although he changes his appearance to people's preferences. He first appears in the series as a Cherokee legend, which is revealed to be true when Neferet releases him from where he was trapped in the Earth. In Tempted he is revealed to have been Nyx's Warrior, but was banished because he grew jealous of her Consort, Erebus. Kalona and Neferet are banished from the school never to return in Hunted. He has a hypnotizing spell, which he used on the House of Night. He loves A-ya, a woman created by ancient Cherokee women to love him and to trap him under the earth. He also believes Zoey Redbird is A-ya (which, ironically, is a Cherokee word meaning 'me'). In Burned he is sent after Zoey, in spirit form, by Neferet's dark powers. He was also banished from Nyx's realm, both his body and soul after bringing Stark back to life because of the debt that he owed Zoey for killing her consort.

Film adaptation

In 2008, Variety reported that a film adaptation of the series was in early planning stages.[46] Film rights were optioned by Empire Pictures and a screenplay for Marked is being written by Kent Dalian,[47] writer-director of Fish in a Barrel.[48]
