Title

Re. "{{DISPLAYTITLE}} can only change the style of the title; it can't add or remove characters" [1]

Weeeeeeelll...that's sort-of-true but...

I wouldn't bother mentioning this on Helpdesk, to new users, because it's a bit hack-ish but...have a look at Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything.

I just thought you might be interested :-) Apologies if you already know that stuff. Best,  Chzz  ►  17:28, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did know, but thanks for looking out! I agree it's a bit too high-level for the help desk. Bility (talk) 19:35, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Archive script

Can your script archive to an archive based on the last date of comments? For instance, I use MiszaBot III to archive by year; some archive to year month (like Archive 2011 08, or Archive 2011 Aug). Or can you set it to prompt for the archive name? I've manually archived a few sections of my talk page because the {{unsigned}} template doesn't generate a date that the bot recognizes. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:43, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good question. There are problems with using a regex on the section text to find the date and there are problems trying to tie revisions in the edit history to a specific section. From a coding perspective, simply prompting for the archive you want to use would be easier, but it must be possible to do it automatically, since bots already have the capability. I'll look into it! — Bility (talk) 23:56, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

questions about editing

Hi, im kinda new to the editing side of wikipedia. First off, what do i need to know? which page or pages should i read first, before starting to edit?

And specifically, i am trying to place an edit request on the hogwarts page, which is protected. How would i go about doing that? (the section titled EDIT request -- Slytherin house values and Harry Potter himself -- September 13, 2011 on the hogwarts talk page is mine. Though i doubt that my request is actually registered by the system).

thanks for your help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darkkelf99 (talkcontribs) 04:56, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I added a welcome message to your talk page that includes some good links for getting started on Wikipedia. I hope that helps! Also, I've responded to your edit request on the Hogwarts talk page. Although your analysis is sound, we generally leave original research to third-party reliable sources. Let me know if you need anything else. Cheers! — Bility (talk) 06:17, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hogwarts slytherin house edit

i made an edit request. you wrote - please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. — Bility (talk) 06:12, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Um, did you read the request? I provided book 7 in the Harry Potter series as a clear source. Is that not a reliable source?!

What, you want page and line number? What i quoted is clear in the epilogue, which is only a couple of pages long. if you need page number il look it up. thanks

And btw, i don't even need to provide a source here, since what is said presently in the article doesn't have any source to begin with. Look, you will see that there are no sources provided for the values of slytherin house. And this value of pure blood, not only doesn't have a source, it is blatantly contradicted by the epilogue of the series, and by harry potter himself. thanks for taking the time to look into this, Darkkelf99 (talk) 08:41, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The book would be a reliable source if it literally said "Slytherin House does not value pure wizard blood most of all". However, you are the one who has identified this contradiction, which is considered original research. On Wikipedia we simply report on information found in reliable third-party sources, not our own interpretations. While I don't doubt that you're right, we simply need a source that says so. — Bility (talk) 16:33, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, but isn't there a rule against including something in an article that has no source? The alleged values of slytherin house set out in the article have no source. Therefore, they should all be removed, until a source (book and page number) is provided. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darkkelf99 (talkcontribs) 22:37, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That may certainly be, and you should feel free to discuss it on the talk page. Edit requests are for uncontroversial changes that already have a consensus behind them. Semi-protecting pages and using edit requests is just a way to stop new and anonymous users from vandalizing an article; regular content issues should still follow the standard practice of being discussed on the talk page. Hopefully if you raise an issue on the talk page some editors that are interested in the topic will respond and you can begin a dialogue. Good luck! — Bility (talk) 15:33, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Özbiliz at Ajax

FYI, the flags in football club's squad do portray the national team they represent - so you should have changed Özbiliz to Dutch. Regards, GiantSnowman 12:33, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I was going off the {{football squad player}} documentation where it says the flag represents the player's nationality and should use where the player was born. When I looked at his article it said he was of Armenian origin, so I took it that whoever used the Armenian flag knew what they were doing. Thanks for figuring it out! — Bility (talk) 15:50, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problems - in fact, nationality remains one of the biggest issues for those of us over at WP:FOOTBALL! Cheers, GiantSnowman 16:04, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
