Arijana Maric - Gigliani (Croatian: Arijana Marić Gigliani, Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [arijǎːna mǎːritɕ dʑiʎâːni]) (27 February 1979-) is a Croatian - Bosnian opera singer (dramatic soprano). Her voice is known for its power and extension used in many operatic roles.

Early career

Arijana Maric - Gigliani was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1979. Gigliani received her primary musical education in Sarajevo.

She made a few quite successful performances during the 1987-1988 season in the role of Hugh Crome in the children's opera The Little Sweep written by Benjamin Britten at the National Theatre in Sarajevo. In a way, that role was de facto her first appearance at front of an opera audience. During the 1990-1991 season, Gigliani performed the role within the children's choir in a Serbo-Croatian language production of the opera Carmen, written by Georges Bizet.

Gigliani graduated violin from music high school in Sarajevo in 1997. During the Bosnian war (April 1, 1992 – December 14, 1995) Arijana played violin as an associate player with the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1998 she moved to Zagreb, Croatia, to study operatic solo singing in the class of Croatian opera soprano Lidija Horvat Dunjko.[1]

She has graduated and obtained her Master of Music from the Music Academy of Zagreb in 2005 and continued to professionally improve singing techniques with a Bulgarian operatic tenor Stojan Stojanov Gančev (Bulgarian: Стоян Стоянов Ганcev).

Professional beginnings

Gigliani made her professional debut in May 2005 in the role of Jelena in opera Nikola Šubić Zrinski [2] written by Croatian composer Ivan pl. Zajc, in the National Theatre in Sarajevo. During the next few years Arijana made a dozen successful solo performances in Croatia, (Zagreb, Rijeka, Pula, Split) and abroad (Austria, Germany, Chech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina). In the following years she performed solo concerts with the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra and Dubrovnik Symphonic Orchestra (Easter 2008. gala concert at the Sarajevo National Opera House) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2z_VWbs3_Q) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck87SZkNxkc&feature=related)

In the summer of 2005 she was offered an engagement by the Croatian Radiotelevision, to make a few recordings on behalf of its Phono Archives.

She had sung the role of Dama di Lady Macbeth in opera Macbeth, written by Giuseppe Verdi[3] and Berta, (a servant to Dr. Bartolo), in opera Il Barbiere di Seviglia by Gioachino Rossini.

Since September to December 2011 she participates in the role of Abigaille in the operatic spectacle project Nabucco (G. Verdi) at the HNK Osijek (National Theatre Osijek, Croatia).

Pedagogic work

During the years Gigliani has shown a prominent sense of teaching secondary education young singers and college students. In the period between 2008-2011 Gigliani won a dozen domestic and international awards with her students. Today she works as a solo singing professor at the music high school Albert Štriga in Križevci, Croatia.[4]
