Another (アナザー, Anazā) is a Japanese fictional mystery horror novel by Yukito Ayatsuji, published on October 29, 2009 by Kadokawa Shoten. A manga adaptation by Hiro Kiyohara was serialized between the May 2010 and January 2012 issues of Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace. A TV anime series produced by P.A. Works premiered on January 10, 2012, and a live-action film will be produced in summer 2012.

Plot

The story begins that a junior high school transferee named Koichi Sakakibara meets a mysterious girl in a hospital. She, named Mei Misaki, wears an eyepatch and go to mortuary with a sentece "My half body wait for me". Koichi meets her again on the first day of school and says hello but she alert hime not to speak to her and says "Beware. It might be happened". Koichi puzzles against her inscrutable caution. And then he find that other classmated and teachers treat her as non-existent girl. They don't see her and avoid to speak about it. Is she a goast or something? What is happening in his class? At last Koichi hears from his aunt from the story of a prestigious girl in the same class from 26 years before that died in an accident. Refusing to accept it her classmates kept pretending she was still alive. In that year' graduation commemorative photograph, the girl supposedly not to be was there. Koichi intuits a connection between the 26 year-old incident and what is happening on Mei Misaki. At that time, Koichi's classmate terriblely died in school as well as the old incident. Mei Misaki pronounces gravely: "It's starting".[1]

A 15 year-old boy who transferred to Yomiyama North Middle School into the 3-3 class, but because of a pneumothorax, he had to be hospitalized just before the start of classes.
Mei Misaki (見崎鳴, Misaki Mei)
Voiced by: Natsumi Takamori
3-3 Classmate. She wears an eyepatch over her left eye, which is a green puppet's eye, and sits in a scratched desk different from other students. Kōichi first meets her on the elevator of Yūmigaoka Hospital.

Ritsuko (理津子, Ritsuko)

Librarian in charge of the No. 2 library room. He was the teacher for class 3-3 the "first year", the year Misaki Yomiyama died. Some years later, he resigned the teaching and stayed as the master of the library. Since then he kept a record of the phenomena, the deceases and their connections, and shares his findings with Kōichi and Mei.

Sanae Mizuno (水野沙苗, Mizuno Sanae)
Voiced by: Seiko Yoshida
Nurse at Yūmigaoka Hospital. She tries to assist Kōichi in unravelling the mystery until a certain point. Killed when the elevator she was riding dropped down the shaft, with the ceiling coming down on her. This incident lead to her being one of the "Deaths of June". Her younger brother is in Class 3-3, making this partly the reason for her death.[citation needed]

Novel

Another is a 677-page novel written by Yukito Ayatsuji. The novel was originally serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's literary magazine Yasai Jidai in intermittent periods between the August 2006 and May 2009 issues. A compiled tankōbon volume was published on October 29, 2009[3] and a two-volume bunkobon version was released on September 25, 2011.[4][5]

Manga

A manga adaptation illustrated by Hiro Kiyohara was serialized between the May 2010 and January 2012 issues of Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace magazine. Four tankōbon volumes were released between October 4, 2010 and December 29, 2011.[6][7]

Anime

An anime TV series adaptation produced by P.A. Works and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima[8] began airing on January 10, 2012. The screenplay was written by Ryō Higaki, and the chief animation director Yuriko Ishii based the character design used in the anime on Noizi Ito's original concept.[8][9] The music was produced by Kow Otani, and the sound director is Yoshikazu Iwanami.[9] The anime has two theme songs: the opening theme "Kyōmu Densen" (凶夢伝染, Nightmare Contagion) by the band Ali Project, and the ending theme "Anemnesis" by Annabel. Sentai Filmworks has licensed the anime series for digital and home video release in 2012.[10]
