von Gaffron und Oberstradam, of Silesia and Prussia, is one of the oldest uradel noble families.
Origins
The first documented head of the family is the knight Janco von Gaffron und Oberstradam, who became feudal Lord of the Oberstradam castle by the Duke of Silesia on July 17, 1329, which is documented in the state archive of Wroclaw, (Cod.dipl. Siles. XXII, No. 4848, pp. 327–33). The family owned and inhabited castles Gaffron, Haltauf, Kunern, Mittel-Schreibendorf, and Oberstradam.
During the Reformation, family members in Silesia became Protestant and to escape from Catholicism. To join the Protestantism, several members of the family left Silesia in the late 1500s and 1600s to other states. The most famous of these was Lieutenant General Adam Abraham von Gaffron und Oberstradam (1665–1738) who left Silesia to not be forced to convert to Catholicism. He became governor of Fyn and commander of the Nyborg castle Denmark.
Another famous member of the family was Ernst Marimilian Hermann von Gaffron auf Kunern (1797–1870), member of the Prussian parliament and Knight of Justice of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. He was promoted to Baron by King Frederick William IV of Prussia on October 15, 1840.
Polish confirmation of the baronial crown to the family coat of arms were obtained for all members on October 15, 1845, which is confirmed by title references in Wykazy Polskich Rodzin Szlacheckich and Polish Encyclopedia Szlachecka, Poland.
