HP Application Lifecycle Management (HP ALM) ) is a software product targeted at accelerating the delivery of secure, reliable modern applications. It is a combination of a common platform, several key applications and a dashboard targeted at managing the core lifecycle of applications. ALM focuses on the core lifecycle from design through readiness for delivery to operations.[1] HP ALM 11.0 was developed and is marketed by the HP Software Division as part of the HP IT Management Software portfolio and was released in November 2010.[2]

The solution provides Information Technology departments with a centralized application management platform for managing and automating within and across application teams and throughout the complete process of developing an application, all within a single workflow.[3] Other companies who produce application lifecycle management software include Micro Focus International and IBM.[4]

ALM 11.0 is designed to support the key stakeholders responsible for delivering applications as they progress through their lifecycle. It focuses on the core lifecycle from design through readiness for delivery to operations. HP ALM 11.00 delivers requirements management, test planning and functional testing, performance testing (when merged with HP Performance Center), developer management (through integration with the most widely used developer environments such as Collabnet, TeamForge and Microsoft Visual Studio) and defect management.[5][6] All of these core lifecycle activities are connected together from a workflow perspective with a common management console, layer of project tracking and planning and built on a common software foundation containing a consistent repository and open integration architecture with a supported SDK.[7] In addition to the software solutions, HP offers a number of consulting services to support HP ALM 11.0.

Components of the HP ALM suite

HP Application Lifecycle Intelligence

Delivers traceability of requirements and defects along with commits implementing/fixing these requirements/defects. QA department can significantly benefit from this traceability to get on time reports and have full visibility into the system under development.

HP Business Process Testing

HP Business Process Testing software is a web-based test design solution. By using keywords, subject matter experts across an organization can build and perform manual and automated tests without any programming expertise.[8]

HP Functional Testing

IT departments use this software to build functional and regression test suites and to collaborate among testers. HP Functional Testing includes an application build feature that allows testers to update one reference in a shared repository and then propagate the changes to all referencing tests. The solution supports Web 2.0 technologies including Silverlight, Flex, Ajax and Dojo. HP QuickTest Professional software is sold as part of the HP Functional Testing solution. HP Functional Testing can be bought separately or as part of suite of products sold as HP Unified Functional testing software.[9]

HP LoadRunner

HP LoadRunner is automated performance and load testing software used to examine system behavior and performance, while generating actual load.[10] HP LoadRunner can emulate thousands of concurrent users to put an application through real-life user loads, while collecting information from key infrastructure components (Web servers, database servers etc.)[11] The results can then be analyzed in detail, to explore the cause for specific behavior and detect bottlenecks.

HP Performance Center

HP Performance Center software is an enterprise-class performance testing platform and framework. The solution is used by IT departments to standardize, centralize and conduct performance testing. HP Performance Center finds software code flaws across the lifecycle of applications. Built on HP LoadRunner software, HP Performance Center supports developer testing and integrates with HP ALM and HP Business Availability Center.[12]

HP Quality Center

HP Quality Center software is a Web-based quality management platform that can be used for a single project or across multiple IT projects to manage application quality across the entire application lifecycle. The solution provides requirements management, release and cycle management, test management, defect management and reporting all from a single platform.[13]

HP Requirements Management module

This module is used by IT departments to capture, manage and track requirements throughout the application development and testing cycle.

HP Service Test Management module

HP Service Test Management module is used by quality assurance teams in the IT department. The solution provides automatic quality assurance testing and is used to identify application component changes so that the solution can automatically generate necessary test cases.

HP Service Test

This software, using a visual test design interface, automates non-GUI (graphical user interface) services and components. Service Test’s .Net environment includes an extensive toolbox that can be dragged and dropped into the test flow to allow for advanced testing.

HP Sprinter

This software automates manual testing activities such as mirror testing, defect logging, setting up data and manually driving repetitive tasks across multiple environments. The solution is fully integrated with HP Application Lifecycle Management and HP Quality Center software. [14]

HP Test Data Management

HP Test Data Management software is structured, automated test data management software that employs automated data sub-setting and masking.[15]

HP Unified Functional Testing

A combination of HP Functional Test (QuickTest Professional) and HP Service Test, HP Unified Functional Testing software is an automated functional defect testing solution for both GUI and non-GUI applications.[16]
