The Eisa Festival is a festival that takes place all over the island of Okinawa. The festival comes at the end of the Obon Festival, and celebrates the end of summer and a farewell to ancestors.[1] The festival has grown over time and since 1956 everyone on the island has been invited to Okinawa City to come together and have one big celebration. The large festival is known as the All-Okinawa Eisa Festival.[2]. Each city contributes to this large festival in many different ways. Each city will usually contribute money to the festival, which usually goes to the costumes and musical instruments. Also on top of the money, each city usually has a team that performs in the festival. However in the beginning of the tradition, most of the towns and villages held their own festivals. Still today, some of the towns have their own festival.[citation needed] Also some of the cities on Okinawa have an Eisa Festival geared towards children.
