Common Dead is a melodic death/thrash metal band from Chicago, United States.[4][2] The band is one of the few metal solo artists in the genre of underground metal, and has obtained a following[5] after several one-man performances and released works on which Laurenson has performed all instrumentation and production duties entirely on his own. The band is also considered one of the background players in the new wave of American heavy metal.[1][6]

History

Common Dead is classified as melodic death metal[7] by various sources, although the band touches on melodic thrash metal,[7] groove metal, and alternative metal[2] influences. Laurenson has performed all instrumentation for all recorded efforts thus far. He plays lead/rhythm guitar and vocals for live occasions.[8]

Sources have suggested that the band name is the result of an incident where the founder was declared "clinically dead" after an accident that suspended his pulse in childhood.[5][1]

Common Dead debuted with a self-titled album in 2009[9] that earned favorable reviews from press.[10][11] In an interview with Metal-Rules.com,[1] Laurenson commented that the band revolves around a melodic guitar influence and raw, forthright vocals. A four-track EP was released in January 2011 entitled Interim Flesh, which experimented with industrial metal influences[12] through symphonic instruments that are not typical of the band's style. The EP scored warm praise from critics.[13]

The band released an album Diatribe in February 2012.[14] It was met with generally positive reviews from numerous sources.[15][16][17] The band has so far released two music videos for songs from this album. One titled "Critical Mass" was broadcasted on Underground Video TV.[18][failed verification][19]

Metal Underground interviewed the band after a raw mix for a Fear Factory song came out on YouTube.[20] Common Dead recorded a cover for "Flashpoint" as the only instrumentalist. They also announced that new members would be joining the band soon.[21]

Laurenson was born in Chicago[1] and is a former film studio intern at Sony Pictures in Culver City, California.[1] His father Phil Laurenson was also an actor in extreme grindhouse horror films including the original The Wizard of Gore and Gore Gore Girls[22][23].
