Tales of Xillia 2 (テイルズオブエクシリア2, Teiruzu obu Ekushiria Tsu) is the 14th mothership title in the Tales series, developed and published by Namco Bandai Games exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The game's tagline is- "Are you prepared to destroy the world for the sake of a girl?" Its characteristic genre name is RPG where Choices Spin the Future (選択が未来を紡ぐRPG, Sentaku ga Mirai wo Tsumugu RPG). The game is set to be released in Japan in Winter 2012, and will be the first game in the series developed by Bandai Namco Studios after Namco Tales Studio was dissolved earlier in 2012, though the core development staff remains the same.[1] It will take place one year after the events of Tales of Xillia in Elenpios.[2][3] It will also have a more modernized feel compared to previous Tales games, including futuristic machinery and large cities.

It will also feature cutscenes animated by Ufotable, who also worked on cutscenes for the original game along with a theme song by Ayumi Hamazaki who also sang Progress, the theme song for the original game, Tales of Xillia. The game is among other sequels in the series, such as Tales of Destiny 2, a mothership title that is the sequel to the 1997 Tales game Tales of Destiny, and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World',' an escort title that was the sequel to Tales of Symphonia.[3]

Characters

Unlike most mothership titles in the series, character designs will be done by Daigo Okumura rather than Kousuke Fujishima or Mutsumi Inomata who have handled the designs for most Tales mothership games. Daigo Okumura had previously worked on character designs for Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, another Tales sequel in addition to his work on various antagonists in the Tales series, though this would be the first time he has designed the main protagonists for a mothership title. It has been confirmed in Weekly Jump that both Alvin and Leia will return with new outfits. It is confirmed that they are playable.

  • Ludger Will Kresnik (ルドガー・ウィル・クルスニク, Rudogaa Wiru Kuresuniku)
Voiced by: Takashi Kondou (Japanese)
The twenty-year-old protagonist of the story. He has excellent cooking skills and works in Trigraph's train restaurants. He lives with his older brother, Julius, in Trigraph, Elenpios.
  • Elle Mel Mata (エル・メル・マータ, Eru Meru Maata)
Voiced by: Mariya Ise (Japanese)
An eight year old girl, she is the main heroine of the game. She is accompanied by Ludger's pet cat Lulu. Her father is in need of help, wanting her to look for the "Land of Canaan" that grants wishes.
  • Lulu
The pet cat of the main protagonist, Ludger. It is seen as a boss to the neighborhood cats.
  • Julius Will Kresnik
Ludger's older brother; his occupation is a Clanspia Corporation agent. Has a very strong sense of responsibility. His quote is “Ludger, please believe me.”
  • Leia Rolando
Returning from the first game, Leia is now an apprentice reporter at a newspaper in Elenpios. Her quote is "I find the truth in my job, and I take pride in it."
  • Alvin
Returning from the first game, Alvin is currently starting a new business in Elenpios and he's growing a beard for it. His quote is "I don't want to lie anymore"

Gameplay

The game will also introduce a new choice system into the game, where players are allowed to choose between two courses of action in the game by pressing the "L1" or "R1" buttons on the controller. The effects of these choices can range greatly from simply different dialogue during a cutscene or choosing between fighting an enemy or retreating. The game will also utilize the XDR-LMBS or Cross Double Raid Linear Motion Battle System for its combat, which is a variant of Xillia's Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System. Party members will have special abilities in battle, such as Ludger's Weapon Shift, where he can swap between swords, guns and a hammer during combat.[3][2]

Development

The game, like the original game , was also teased via a teaser countdown site that lasted 19 days. During the final eleven days of the countdown, a series of quotes were released every day in relation to the game.[4]

  • 1 day - “So, what are you guys hoping for?”
  • 2 days – “It would be nice to make memories like that once again.”
  • 3 days – “I want you to look ahead. Because every person has that power.”
  • 4 days – “Even if that’s the case…… appearances aren’t the most important thing, right?”
  • 5 days – “…I’m gonna tell you something. There are things in this world that can’t be destroyed.”
  • 6 days – “Is a person not stronger if they have someone to protect?”
  • 7 days – “Continue to fight alone, and someday loneliness will swallow you.”
  • 8 days – “You’ll regret not staying here until your death!”
  • 9 days – “Erasing in secret, leaving nothing behind… That’s your guy’s specualty, isn’t it?”
  • 10 days – “The form of its capacity was seen. The depth of the next one is immeasurable.”
  • 11 days – “What we need is ‘choice.’ A ‘choice’ on which everything we have – our lives, our world – hinges.”

The game was then officially announced during the 2012 Tales of Festival held on June 2, 2012.[3]
